Product Review- Brookfarm

Happy Thursday, friends! One more day until Friday which means one more day until the weekend!

Today I have a product review on one of my favourite Australian brands- Brookfarm. Brookfarm is a family owned business whom create a range of macadamia based products of muesli, walkabout mixes, muesli bars and macadamia oil – available in regular and gluten free options.

Their tag line is ‘slow food for fast people‘ and our philosophy is about creating delicious and nutritiously sound products. Their tag line is perfect for those on the go or consider breakfast an easy meal to skip due to time constraint- their products are perfectly suited to fit into the busy lifestyle, while packing a nutritious punch!

What I love about this particular product range is its use of the macadamia nut- I often find this nut does not get the credit it deserves as it is overrun by peanuts, almonds and walnuts!

I was generously sent a range of their products to sample and review including-
  • Muesli range- In natural, toasted and gluten free
  • Walkabout mix- exotic fruit and nut mixes- Nightcap range and the bogong range
  • Brookfarm bars– Toasted and gluten free
  • Brookfarm bircher
  • Porrij- Power porrij and gluten free porrij

Muesli range- Natural, Toasted and Gluten free
I was a huge fan of all three varieties of muesli. I generally don’t eat muesli or cereal in the traditional way with milk- I use it as a mix in for greek yogurt, cottage cheese or a protein smoothie. I loved how all three varieties were not predominantly filled with rolled oats. They were all chock full of macadamia nuts, sunflower seeds and lightly sweetened with dried fruits like sultanas and apricots. I loved the subtle hint of honey throughout. I also really enjoyed the gluten free version of it, which substituted buckwheat and rice bran instead of the rolled oats.
Walkabout mix and Brookfarm bars-
These were great for me to bring along to university on my packed days. The walkabout mixes were an interesting twist on more traditional trail mix type snacks. The walkabout mixes contained cranberries, macadamia nuts, pistachios, almonds, pumpkin and sunflower seeds and my favourite-  Belgian dark chocolate which featured in the Mt.Bogong variety.
The Brookfarm bars had a really subtle honey and cinnamon flavour and as with their other products- generously filled with macadamia nuts. I also really liked the sweetness from the dried cranberries throughout.
I am a huge fan of oatmeal for breakfast or a small snack between meals and this fit the bill perfectly! the Power Porrij and gluten free porrij featured oats, barley, organic quinoa, organic amaranth, organic golden flaxseed, rice bran, macadamias and an overall hint of cinnamon. The Power porrij also included almonds. After cooking it up with almond milk in the microwave for 1.5 minutes, a dash of cinnamon and a spoonful of peanut butter provided an extremely satisfying and filling start to the day!
Brookfarm Bircher-
This was without a doubt my favourite product! The brookfarm bircher was made of a base of organic brown rice, organic millet, almonds, organic quinoa, organic amaranth, organic golden flaxseed, rice bran, red cherries. cranberries and macadamias. Once again there was a hint of cinnamon throughout. I made mine overnight style- I combined the serving of Brookfarm bircher with 1/2 cup greek yogurt, 1/2 cup almond milk and a sprinkle of chia seeds and left it covered in the fridge. The next morning, I mixed more almond milk to the thick mixture and added more almonds and it fuelled a killer leg session!
Overall, I was completely satisfied with the variety and taste of all Brookfarm products. Even though I don’t often eat gluten free products, I must admit their gluten free offerings were some of the most tasty!

They really are overshadowed which is perplexing- they taste so good!

The worlds greatest cookie ever (Not sure if they have it in Canada but if they do, you MUST get one) is the white chocolate and macadamia cookies from subway. They actually have crack in them.

I like macadamia nuts, but for some reason I hardly eat them. They are super expensive in the store, so I guess that’s probably the main reason why I don’t buy any. I definitely enjoy them in baked goods or granola bars!

I am an equal opportunity nut eater – so macadamia, almonds, peanuts, brazil, cashew…I love em all and try not to discriminate.
Yes, I do purchase GF and am not gluten intolerant – but GF stuff sometimes tastes so good – for eg. Target GF blue corn chips are so so amazing compared to their regular Gluten Full chips!
Btw, Those walkabout mixes I sure could get addicted to!

So I was looking back through your posts (because I’m obviously very far behind D: ) and came across your body image post. Wow. Once again, it was a real eye opener. Having dealt with body image issues in the past, I have always been conscious of what other females might be going through, but I hadn’t thought about the same thing in men. Not that I try to judge anyone, but I just hadn’t thought about it in the terms you presented. I try to be careful about what I say around others just because I don’t know their past and don’t want to trigger anything, and I often find myself cringing when I hear others say thing that I think might be triggering to someone having body image issues – you just never know who is in the room! So anyone, thanks so much for sharing. It was both heartbreaking to know what you’ve been through as well as inspiring to know how far you’ve come!

Oh and all these products look wonderful! I love how all the cereals and bars look packed with goodies. I hate it when something claims to be say “blueberry” oatmeal and then there’s like maybe 3 dried blueberries in a packet. I want to know the flavors are there! And macadamia nuts are definitely a favorite nut of mine (amongst many I must admit 😉 ). Especially chocolate covered macadamia nuts from Hawaii. Ohhhh man I need to go back to Hawaii again JUST for a box (or twenty…) of those! 😛

Thank you so much for your kind words, Alex! It really means alot!

That really annoys me too about products which claim to have x or y ingredients in them but the reality of it is…maybe 1 or 2 if your lucky. The worst is mixed nuts. I swear its 95% peanuts! Australia claims to be famous to its macadamia nuts worldwide so screw Hawaii and come here!

Love the trail mixes, great for a little treat or snack.

And the power porij is awesome! Where i used to to work, we ordered from ‘soulfresh’, who stocked the Brookfarm products, and I *may* have been given a few samples from them from time to time 😛 They were certainly one of my favorites haha
