A simple, delicious spice rub based off smoked paprika, sea salt and curry powder takes basic salmon the next level. Paleo, gluten free and a healthy, high protein option!
Happy Wednesday guys! Every so often, What I Ate Wednesday falls on the same day as the Recipe Redux and today happens to be one of those days! Before we get into the recipe, here’s a full day of eats from the weekend- Breakfast and lunch was pretty much the same in different forms. Big props to Jenn for hosting!
Breakfast- At mums- Homemade breakfast sausage, kettle corn baked potatoes, crusty baguette, cherry tomatoes and boiled eggs. This was doused in sriracha post photograph.
Lunch– A 3 egg and spinach omelette with parmesan cheese and a side of leftover kettle corn baked potatoes. This was the first time I’ve eaten any greens in quite some time!
Snack- I’ve been crushing on cottage cheese since Summer started here and I can’t see it leaving anytime soon. Topped with two single serving packets of Barney Butter because one is clearly not enough.
Dinner- I feel like it’s been forever since I’ve had a good piece of salmon! Smoked paprika roasted salmon (recipe below) with a mound of fluffy basmati rice.
Confession- Dinner was eaten cold and it was amazing. No shame.

Start Smoking in the New Year
The New Year is heating up with smoke and spiciness. From boldly flavored smoked salts to actual smoking techniques, subtly smoked food is on-trend. The same can be said for spice as we savor heat from harissa, sriracha and smoked paprika. Show us the healthy dish you’re heating up with smoke and/or spiciness.
This month’s theme was one I was a huge fan of- Seeing as I love playing around with spices and enhancing traditionally mellow foods with them. Salmon is a protein which I find tastes delicious with minimal seasonings. Paprika is a spice I use often like in this shrimp recipe or this pesto– However I’d never thought to add it to salmon. I made a spice rub of smoked paprika, a dash of curry and some sea salt and rubbed it on the salmon before slow roasting it for 30 minutes, until pink and flakey.
This salmon is so flavourful and all you need his three spices and some olive oil to rub it in. It’s simple, quick and the perfect protein option for busy nights or when you want a quick meal. Not only that, but it’s pretty darn fancy looking and tasting.
- 4 filets of salmon (approximately 125-150 grams each)
- 2 T smoked paprika
- 1 tsp curry powder
- 1 tsp red pepper flakes
- 1 tsp sea salt
- Olive oil
- Preheat the oven to 150 degrees celsius (Not fan forced). Line and grease a baking tray with baking paper and set aside.
- In a small bowl, combine the smoked paprika, curry powder, red pepper flakes and sea salt and mix to combined.
- One filet at a time, coat the salmon in the spice rub and cover both sides evenly. Place on the greased baking tray and roast in the oven for 30 minutes, or until flaky on top. Remove and eat immediately, or allow to cool completely.
