What is a seafood boil made of? 

You don’t need a lot of ingredients to make this seafood boil recipe. Here’s everything that it calls for. 

  • Lemons. Use fresh lemons. 
  • Bay leaves. Adds a subtle bitterness to avoid making the recipe heavy. 
  • Old bay seasoning. A blend of herbs and spices.
  • Black peppercorns. The secret ingredient to any good seafood boil. It gives all the ingredients a delicious flavor.
  • Salt. To taste. 
  • New potatoes. Smaller and quick-cooking, and also so much fun to eat. 
  • Yukon gold potatoes.  Cut them into halves. 
  • Kielbasa.  Or any sausage of choice.
  • Onions. 
  • Corn. Either whole cobs that have been halved or mini ears of corn. 
  • Shrimp. Peeled with their tails intact. Choose larger prawns for a meatier flavor. 
  • Clams. Clean up before adding to the recipe. 
  • Parsley and lemon slices. To serve.

How do you cook this? 

Start by adding water to a pot with bay leaves, peppercorns, salt, and the old bay seasoning. Bring to a boil, and then add potatoes to cook for 7-8 minutes. Add clams, sausages, and onions and boil for another 5 minutes. Finally, add corn and boil until it’s cooked and the potatoes are tender.

Now, add shrimp and let it simmer until no longer pink. Drain all the ingredients.

Finally, transfer the seafood boil to a serving dish and drizzle the seafood boil sauce all over it.

Variations 

The beauty of this recipe is just how easy it is to customize with your favorite seafood, spices, and additions. Here are some ideas:

  • Swap shrimp with other seafood. You can replace shrimp with crab and crawfish or even mussels. 
  • Alter the spices. Don’t want to get bored using the same spice? Try adding cajun spices to your recipe.
  • Add eggs. They absorb the spices and the sauce’s rich flavor, adding flavor to the dish. 

Storage instructions

To store. Place leftovers in a shallow container and store them in the refrigerator for up to three days. 

Reheating. Microwave portions for 20-30 seconds or reheat in a non-stick pan. 

To freeze. Once the seafood boil has cooled to room temperature, transfer it to a container and store it in the freezer for up to two months.

Ingredients  

  • 2 whole bay leaves
  • 3/4 cup old bay seasoning
  • 3 tablespoons salt
  • 2 teaspoons black peppercorns
  • 2 lbs new potatoes
  • 2 lbs Yukon gold potatoes quartered
  • 2 large yellow onions quartered
  • 2 lbs kielbasa chopped
  • 1 lb clams scrubbed
  • 8 ears corn halved
  • 3 lbs large shrimp peeled
  • 1 cup seafood boil sauce
  • 2 small lemons quartered

Instructions 

  • Add 6 quarts of water to a 12-quart pot, along with bay leaves, salt, peppercorns, and the old bay seasoning. Bring to a boil. Add potatoes and cook for 7-8 minutes. Add sausage, clams, and onions, and boil for five more minutes. Add corn and continue boiling until cooked and the potatoes are tender. 
  • Add the shrimp and simmer until no longer pink. Drain everything.
  • Transfer the shrimp boil to a large serving dish and dust with more old bay seasoning. Drizzle the seafood boil sauce over the top. Decorate with fresh parsley and lemon slices.
