My sister and mum were recently in Iran to organise some family matters but also to enjoy one of the highlights there- The food! The Persian eating habits (in terms of meal sizes and timing) would be generally quiet Mediterranean- A standard, simple breakfast, a large lunch and a light dinner- with desserts or fruit before bed. Niki, besides taking potentially illegal selfies, also took some foodie shots. Time to take the…plate, Niki.
Big props to Jenn for hosting!
Persian style ‘Barbari’ bread (a thick, flavourful flat bread) was eaten every morning with the standard sides- Persian feta cheese, unsalted butter, various jams (homemade by my grandma!) and the freshly brewed tea with sugar cubes. The bread was freshly baked that morning and it is perhaps the thing I miss most about Iran…and my grandma.
A typical lunch- Lunch is the biggest meal of the day and typically includes a soup, main dish based around rice and a side salad. My favourite- Grilled chicken and beef kebabs with saffron and butter basmati rice with grilled tomatoes and herbs. I’m not the biggest meat eater, but my inner cave girl came out. A cave girl wearing a head scarf.
A typical dinner- Dinners are generally very small or basic- either leftovers from lunch or a fried egg with barbari and natural yogurt. Nothing worth picturing. How about desserts and Persian sweets?
Persian cookies are some of the ugliest things I have ever seen. Seriously, they make Arman’s food photography look like Epicurious or National Geographic…with food.
However, they taste absolutely delicious. I asked my mum what it was made of and she said butter and sugar. Thanks, mum.
Thanks Niki for giving me Persian Food envy. Niki will be back tomorrow for another round of The 3 F’s!
Have you ever eaten Persian food before?
Is lunch or dinner your main meal?
What did you have for breakfast today?
