Oh dear. The team and Crunch and Nestlé reignited some memories when they reached out to collaborate with them.
How do you make enemies with family ‘friends’?
Go hiking with them with candy bars.
Why would that create enemies?
Because hiking with Celiac friends without gluten-free candy bars is like torture to them.
Every Winter, my sister and two of our family friends would catch up while our mum’s would go off and gossip about what terrible children we were and how we weren’t studying hard enough. While they had this mother’s club, us four ‘kids’ would usually go to the shopping centre, grab lunch and sit in the food court waiting for them to finish up.
Two years ago, our family friend had the silly idea to go hiking- Something my sister and I did NOT appreciate. It was freezing cold, we were lazy and had been contemplating what meal to buy at the food court. However, because we were good sports, we agreed to go. As we were planning on being in a remote location for several hours, my mum told Niki to pack snacks for us all. Niki compiled and packed candy bars, skittles and a bottle of soft drink.
My sister and I conveniently forgot that these family friends of ours were gluten intolerant and could not eat any of the snacks we brought with us, including the crunch candy bars. Mum was never one to ever willingly buy us chocolate bars, but my sister convinced her that because it had crispy rice cereal in them, they were pretty much a granola bar.
We set off on this hike and were relieved to see that the small mountain had been closed off due to a potential avalanche, so only the surrounding area was free to roam. Perfect. We had only been walking for about 15 minutes or so before Niki whipped out the stash of snacks.
“Who wants a crunch bar?!”
“Jess and I can’t eat that. We’re gluten intolerant. Didn’t you bring anything else?”
“Yes. I brought the plastic bag to carry them in.”
Safe to say, whilst our mothers still have their yearly gossip session (and probably only call US the bad children), our family friends have conveniently been ‘busy’ on this one day of the year.
When the folk at Crunch reached out to collaborate with them, I was already a fan of their chocolate bars because anything with rice crispies mixed in and I’m game. However, I know my gluten-free, vegan and diabetic friends out there can’t enjoy this bar of texture deliciousness. Hence- I tried it out two times using two different types of chocolate-

- 1 1/2 cups dairy free or sugar-free baking chips of choice
- 1/4-1/2 cup gluten-free crispy rice cereal of choice
- Line a baking dish or tray with baking paper and grease lightly. Pour your crispy rice cereal in it and evenly spread it out.
- In a microwave safe bowl or stovetop, melt your chocolate. Once melted, pour over the crispy rice cereal. Refrigerate until firm.
- Break apart into bite sized pieces and enjoy.
- These can be kept at room temperature in an air-tight container or refrigerated/frozen.
