“I can’t wait to watch Summer’s Olympics this year!“- Arman of 1992.
“I can’t wait to watch Summer’s Olympics this year!”- Arman of 1996.
“The Olympics are seasonally racist. The need to remove ‘Summer’ from it!”– Arman of 2000.
Growing up in Australia, it took me two Olympic cycles to realize that the Olympics was NOT owned by someone named Summer- It was based on the season it occurred. I always thought someone named ‘Summer’ must have invented it or something. That is, until I got a very rude awakening in my ancient history class.
…Let’s not discuss the fact that I didn’t even think to question my parents about the origin of this faux ‘Summer’ person.
For the first time in forever, I am actually going to be experiencing the Olympics during summer, and I’m pretty stoked….purely so I can call it the SUMMER Olympics.
It’s the little things, friends.
This year, a group of my high school friends will be heading to Rio to experience the games themselves! Part me was considering going, but after checking flights, timing and then the (positive) spanner of getting a book deal, it was no longer an option.
The real reason I won’t be going is because I can’t bring a Vuvuzela into the area. Don’t know what a Vuvuzela is? Google it. I once almost gave Niki a heart attack using it. 😀
Moving on, I’m quite envious of my friends going. So far, they will be watching several events, including the swimming, diving and I think one of the marathon races. I think, however, they are more excited for being nocturnal- Another friend of ours who studied abroad there said that the nightlife STARTED at midnight.
That’s it, I’m moving to Rio….post Olympics.
So…what do my friends, Rio De Janeiro, and today’s recipe have in common? A ton, actually.
One of our friends studied in Brazil back in 2012, and mentioned a cafe called ‘Terzetto’. This was his favorite study location, not just because of it’s location and ambiance, but also its cake. BLACK FOREST CAKE in particular. He’s convinced them that they need to go to Terzetto, get the house coffee (condensed milk and a shot of espresso) and a slice of black forest cake. While I may not be able to enjoy those antics with them over there, I will be enjoying my black forest overnight oats…..
Before we get into today’s recipe, it’s also Wednesday so let’s see what made my plate!
Breakfast- Black forest oatmeal (recipe below). Lunch- Avocado Cheddar Burger with shoestring fries (the fries were terrible and I barely ate half). We also shared some Pad Thai, only after that terrible cilantro was removed. 🙂 Dinner- I was still full from lunch so dinner was leftover fruit (used in a cookbook photo shoot, ha!), this granola over some quark (German cottage cheese).
So let’s talk overnight oats, especially ones which taste was inspired by the classic Black forest cake! Initially, I tried it out with coconut milk AND coconut cream and while delicious, my stomach felt like it ate a block of butter an hour later. The next time, I used standard canned coconut milk and that worked great- Although any milk of choice would work fine. So, let’s get oatmeal’ing!
This high protein black forest oatmeal is thick, creamy and has the most amazing texture, you won’t believe it’s healthy! I use my original tried and tested method of getting the authentic ‘cake’ texture by adding a tablespoon of coconut flour, which seriously takes it up a notch! It’s packed with protein, made with no sugar and bursting with tart cherries! Topped with shaved dairy free chocolate chunks and some dark cocoa powder, it epitomizes dessert for breakfast! It’s also suitable for those following a gluten free, vegan, dairy free and sugar free diet!
HACK! For this recipe, I used Growing Naturals Brown Rice Chocolate Rice Protein which mixed beautifully with the oats. Their vanilla works just as well, especially when adding an extra tablespoon of cocoa powder.

Make this healthy High Protein Black Forest Overnight Oats and let’s go to Rio.
For Black forest cake.
I mean the Olympics.
- 1/2 cup rolled oats (use gluten free, if necessary)
- 1 T coconut flour (can sub for 1 T oat flour or almond flour)
- 1-2 T granulated sweetener of choice*
- 1-2 T cocoa powder
- 1 scoop Growing Naturals Vanilla or Chocolate Brown Rice Protein Powder
- 1 T ground flax (can sub for chia seeds)
- pinch sea salt
- drop vanilla extract
- 1/2-3/4 cup + milk of choice (I used canned lite coconut milk)
- 1/4 cup cherries (fresh or thawed from frozen)
- 1-2 T chocolate chunks/chips
- In a cereal bowl or small container, combine your rolled oats, coconut flour, cocoa powder, protein powder, ground flax, sea salt and mix well. Add half a cup of the milk of choice, along with the vanilla extract, and mix well. If mixture is too crumbly (it may be due to coconut flour and protein powder), add extra milk until an inch or so remains above the oats. Add the cherries and refrigerate for at least an hour, or overnight.
- The next morning, remove- Oat mixture should be thick and creamy. If too thick, add milk to thin out to desired consistency. Top with extra cherries and chocolate chunks/chips and enjoy!
- Want to enjoy this oatmeal warm? This can easily be done as it doesn't contain yogurt! Simply add an extra 1/4 cup of milk prior. Oatmeal is also freezer friendly.
