“My New Year’s resolution is to stop eating chocolate!”

….A statement you’ll never hear coming from my mouth.

Actually, any resolution which involves cutting out a food group or demonises a particular diet would never be on my radar.

Okay, I lied. Kale.

Kale.

IN 2016, I will eat kale…..once.

There you go.

But in all seriousness, I think many are often guilty of making resolutions involving banning certain food groups or trialling a new diet without much thought or consideration. Initially, there may be some positive results from these actions. However, in the long run, this may lead to a slew of potential setbacks and affects on one’s health.

With this brand new year ahead of us, it’s easy to make goals but sticking to them is the tricky bit. A great starting point would be to focus on what we are putting inside our bodies and we can start with our nutrition. Deprivation or banning certain food groups is pretty much a recipe for disaster so it’s HOW we present them which can make these changes commonplace.

From personal experience, I found setting small, attainable goals to be the ones which have the long-lasting positive effect. There are actually several small goals I made a few years back which are now commonplace to me today- Purely because they were achievable, sustainable and well…..didn’t involve kale or banning chocolate.

I’m thrilled to once again be collaborating with Kohl’s, as part of their #makeyourmove campaign. It’s been both a pleasure and an honor to be working with a brand which promotes a healthy lifestyle for their consumers. Today’s recipe may look sinful but actually, is incredibly healthy and perfect to incorporate into your day-to-day nutrition plan.

Ingredients
  1. 1 1/2 cups gluten free oat flour (For a paleo option- Use 6 T coconut or almond flour)
  2. 1/2 cup chocolate protein powder (optional)*
  3. pinch sea salt
  4. 2 T cocoa powder
  5. 1/4 cup granulated sweetener of choice (optional)**
  6. 1/2 cup overripe mashed banana (about 1 medium)
  7. 1/4 cup nut butter of choice (I used almond butter)
  8. 1/4 cup + dairy free milk of choice***
  9. 2 T crushed walnuts
  10. 2 T dairy free chocolate chunks
Instructions
  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, protein powder, cocoa powder, sea salt, granulated sweetener of choice and mix well. Add in the mashed banana- Mixture should be very crumbly. Add the chocolate chunks and walnuts and mix well.
  2. In a microwave safe bowl, melt the nut butter. Pour wet mixture into the flour/banana mixture until fully incorporated.
  3. Using a tablespoon at a time, add the dairy free milk of choice until a very thick batter is formed.
  4. Using your hands, form into bite sized balls and refrigerate for at least 20 minutes to firm up.
Notes
  1. * I've tried this using a vegan blend, a casein blend and a paleo blend
  2. ** Adjust accordingly- I omitted because I preferred the sweetness from the fruit/protein powder
  3. *** Adjust accordingly- You may need more depending on the protein powder and/or flour you use.

  1. Overripe Banana. I love this. They are the best!
I like Kale, but I like chicken and eggs better, you know that. And well, chocolate. Always chocolate.
#makeyourmove to buy oberpriced food here in Sydney. I’m glad this makes me feel like home!

  2. I am SO digging this right now! I especially llke that there isn’t coconut flour in it. I love coconut flour in baked things, but not so much raw.
This is definitely my kind of healthy 😀

  3. Yes to chunky monkey bites and to not banning food groups! I refuse to ban any specific foods entirely. There are plenty of things I don’t eat, but that’s definitely not because I “can’t” have it. I feel like when you ban an entire food it just becomes something you want even more.

  4. Costco has a baby kale salad mix that is out of this world. It comes with cranberries, nuts and dressing. Delicious.. I add a little feta cheese on top… Yummmm

  5. Anyone who bans chocolate will soon be headed for disaster because one cannot simply give up chocolate and be sane! Yes to chunky monkey everything. I just made a chunky monkey french toast in a mug that I can’t wait to share because that combo is unreal. These dipped in even more chocolate would be epic!

  6. Oh I’m right there with you on kale. I really only like it if it’s blended up with lots of fruits in a smoothie and I basically can’t taste it…
So happy you won’t be banning chocolate any time soon because I’m not sure what I’d do without your delish chocolate recipes!

  7. As a fan of anything in ball or bite form, I’m all about these! I’m all about anything that involves chocolate and DOESN’T use an oven, since mine is currently broken. Totally making these later today!
And seriously….who in there right mind would try to give up chocolate? That’s a resolution waiting to be broken….

  8. I used to worship kale in every form. Now my love has kind of toned down, but I still love adding it in salads, curries, stir-fries and in soups! It is healthier raw, but I like it a bit soft so that it’s easier to chew and digest. I do understand that people hate it because it’s bitter and very dense, so it’s kind of funny to hear others say how horrible it is!
I love the idea of these bites–chunky monkey is such a delicious flavor!

  9. Chunky Monkey Ben and Jerry’s is one of my favorites you get here in Germany. Like Rocky Road, Chunky Monkey is another one of those I adore not only because of the taste but also because it sounds so great! I assume that’s a non native speaker thing.

I love the recurring bananas in your recipes lately 🙂
