This oat flour banana bread is a moist and hearty loaf that does not use traditional flours whatsoever! Made in just one bowl, it uses simple ingredients and requires minimal prep!

Oat Flour Banana Bread
When it comes to oat flour recipes, my favorites to make are muffins, cookies, and this oat flour banana bread.
Over the past few months, many of my friends and family have been struggling to find staple flours in the grocery stores. It seems like many people fear that there may be a shortage at some stage, similar to the events that have recently taken place. Luckily, it’s easy to bake various foods without using traditional flours.
One of my go-to ingredients has always been oat flour. Oat flour, as the name suggests, is flour that is made up of rolled or quick oats. A simple blitz in the blender will provide you with an instant batch of this versatile flour. I often use it in a plethora of baking, but my favorite use for it is in banana bread.
I’ve been meaning to share an oat flour banana bread recipe for quite some time. It’s a great alternative to using white or wheat flour, and takes seconds to make! It uses easy and affordable ingredients and is perfect whenever I’ve run out of traditional flour.
No wheat and no butter is needed, but you’d never tell. The texture is moist and hearty in the middle and has a gorgeous tender crumb. It’s sweet and full of banana flavor, with hints of delicious oats throughout!
Several of my friends have been struggling to find white flour and whole wheat flour in the grocery stores and have LOVED having this recipe on hand- Thank goodness for pantry staples!
How do you make banana bread with oat flour?
The Ingredients
- Oat flour– Homemade oat flour. Don’t waste your money buying the supermarket brands as they are overpriced!
- Baking powder– Gives some rise to the bread and keeps it fluffy in the middle.
- Salt– Just a pinch to bring out the sweetness of all the other ingredients.
- Oil– Any neutral flavored oil can be used. My favorites include vegetable oil, olive oil, and safflower oil.
- Eggs– Room temperature eggs. If you follow a vegan diet, you can use flax eggs (2 tablespoons ground flaxseed mixed with 6 tablespoons of water. Let sit for 10 minutes, until a gel is formed).
- Sugar– Brown sugar or coconut sugar is preferred, but white can be used in a pinch!
- Bananas– Use overripe bananas for a sweeter bread.
- Vanilla extract– A must for any good banana bread!
- Walnuts– Optional, but highly recommended.
The Instructions
Start by whisking together your oat flour, baking powder, and salt in a small bowl then set it aside. In a large mixing bowl, add the oil, eggs, sugar, banana, and vanilla extract and whisk together until smooth. Gently stir through the dry ingredients until combined, before folding through the walnuts.
Now, transfer the banana bread batter into a lined loaf pan and bake at 180C/350F for 40-45 minutes, or until a skewer comes out mostly clean. Remove the loaf from the oven and let it cool in the pan completely, before removing and slicing.

Tips to make the best recipe
- If you notice the bread is becoming a little too brown, you can cover the pan with tin foil around the 25-minute mark.
- For a gluten free option, use certified gluten free rolled oats and blend them to a flour consistency.
- Feel free to fold through other nuts, raisins, or even chocolate chips.
Storing and freezing oatmeal banana bread
- To store: Oat flour banana bread should be stored in the refrigerator, covered. The bread will keep well for up to 1 week.
- To freeze: Place leftover slices of the bread in a ziplock bag and store it in the freezer for up to 6 months.

Could I swap oil for Greek yogurt!
Hi Karina- I haven’t tested it myself, but I think Greek yogurt should work decently- When replacing oil, it’s usually applesauce or Greek yogurt that I recommend, and the Greek yogurt would be better for this as there is already mashed banana. Let me know how it goes!
Very nice recipe. I replaced sugar with maple syrup and it turned out very well.
Thanks for the lovely feedback and star rating, Yashika. I appreciate you making my recipe.
Can I just completely omit adding the 1/2 cup sugar? If so I will follow everything else in the recipe just without the added sugar.
Also Happy New Year!!
Hi Alyssa! Happy new year. I did test this without any sugar (one of my trials before sharing it to see how it fared) and found that the banana bread lacked real sweetness without it (even with the bananas). If you plan on enjoying it with some peanut butter spread on top or some strawberry jelly, then go for it, or if you like non-sweet quick breads. Otherwise,I do recommend keeping it in, or at most, reducing it by about 2 tablespoons.
SO GOOD. Crumbling and delicious. Only recipe I’ll use from now on!
Sapna, thank you for your lovely comment- I appreciate it. It’s such a simple yet delicious way to bake banana bread, isn’t it!
Whenever I attempt to bake a new dish, it ends in complete disaster. However, this easy-to-follow recipe had me hooked, and it turned out perfectly. I would highly recommend this recipe!
Thank you, Zinna!
It was super yummy!
I swapped out the sugar for Monk fruit sweetener, the oil for Coconut oil, and even threw in some raisins I’d soaked for about 10 minutes.
Super easy, quick and delicious! 😋
Julio- Thank you for sharing your changes! I’m glad monk fruit worked out well for you, as it can sometimes make baked goods a little dry. Also, I’m SO glad you enjoy raisins and added them- that is something I’d do too!
Have you ever made this with maple syrup? Really looking forward to trying it!
Hi Barb- I had one of my recipe testers try it out, and it worked- but there are a few adjustments that need to be made- Use 1/3 cup of maple syrup and reduce the oil from 1/2 cup to 1/3 cup. You would also need to increase the baking time to about 45 minutes. Let me know how it goes!
I tried this recipe and don’t know why the surface of my bread is cracked and it does not turn brown. Any ideas to fix that?
Hi Amelia- did you change any of the ingredients or open the oven too early? Even checking on it a few times puts the bread at risk for sinking in the middle. If that happens again, cover with tin foil and continue baking until done.
Thank you. I added cinnamon but that was my only change. Delicious
Love that addition, Susan. Thanks for the lovely review and star rating!
I’ve made this recipe 15 times or more at this point! Love that’s it’s a simple ingredient list and texture is amazing! I usually omit the sugar and add choc chips instead as my preference is less sweet. Amazing recipe!
Thanks Terri. So glad you like this one!
i have tried loads and loads of banana bread recipes – with regular flour and oat flour – but among all of them this one is an absolute winner.
i skipped the walnuts but added cocoa powder and chocholate chips to get the double chocholate banana bread and it was divine. so fluffy but also moist at the same time. love me some extra fibre!!
Thank you so much for your kind words! I really appreciate that you enjoyed this oat flour banana bread and prefer it over other ones! LOVE the addition of cocoa powder and extra chocolate chips- that is something I would do too. Thanks for the inspiration!
This is a yummy bread!!!! I made it today and we all loved it. I can’t believe it’s butter-free. Every banana bread recipe I’ve used calls for butter. This is so much better for you.
So happy to hear that Amy, thanks so much for sharing!
So good! I used half melted butter and half oil and it turned out great. Also added a scoop of Greek yogurt for extra moisture and added chocolate chips and walnuts. Very moist and light texture!
Oh lovely- glad it worked with the additional Greek yogurt. Have a great day, Ella!
Soo delicious. I substitued the sugar with date caramel and it turned out amazing and really healthy too
Oh love that substitution!!
Best banana bread recipe I’ve tried so far. Oat flour is better than most gluten free flours I’ve tried. This is perfect and super easy.
Thank you for your kind feedback, Laura!
I made this banana bread yesterday! Normally oat flour can be tricky but this turned out perfectly! Thank you! Im now raiding your instagram and blog to see if you have an oat flour bread recipe
Delicious! I used monkfruit instead of sugar, 4 bananas instead of 3, chia eggs instead of flax eggs, and 1 cup of walnuts instead of half a cup. Will be making it again and again!!
This is delicious. I subbed monks fruit for the sugar and greek yogurt for the oil. Baking time was 60 minutes.
Wonderfully moist and flavorful abd not overly sweet. I will definitely make this again.
What is the cup or gram measurement of the bananas or other fruit?
1 1/2 cups for the mashed bananas 🙂
Used plain organic yogurt instead of oil. So good, gone in hours. And used half Monkfruit sugar and half date sugar. Also added raisins. Cream cheese mixed with vanilla extract and choice of sweetener in the middle. Yum yum yum
This was absolutely perfect in my opinion. My husband liked it too (however he asked me to make him a batch that’s a little more sweet – do you have a suggestion on how to add more sugar to not compromise the consistency and texture of the bread?) it really is perfect, IMO! Thank you
Hello Michayla- thank you so much for your kind words! How funny- my partner prefers this sweeter too, and has an intense sweet tooth! When I make it for them, I usually add 1/4 cup of extra sugar and it doesn’t affect the texture whatsoever.
This is really good! Thank you for posting it; it gave me confidence to use oat flour for banana bread. I accidentally added an additional egg so added some pea protein powder plus a little extra flour, and it turned out fine.
Delicious! I bake in a cast iron pan and it comes out divinnnnneee every time. Modifications: Used slivered almonds (no walnuts on hand), avocado oil, 1/4 tsp each cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, apple pie spice, 1 scoop protein powder. Thank you!
Moist, delicious, added walnuts, cinnamon raisins and reduced oil since it was banana bread- Delicious & foolproof! Gotta try it and may as well save the page. Heck, make 2. I’m back in the kitchen bc it went to fast!!! *sigh*
Haha always a good reason 🙂
This bread is delish, I made the batter times 4 and i still came back for more!!
Must try it
I made this using just 1/4 c brown sugar instead of 1/2 c, added 1/2 c non-fat greek yogurt for more protein, and used butter instead of oil. It was so delicious! Plenty sweet with the reduced sugar. Looking forward to making it again with avocado oil to make it even healthier. Only had olive oil on hand at the time and was afraid taste would be too strong.
This is the best and easiest recipe of gluten free banana bread! Thank you
Delicious and moist!! Will be making again
Please do, Krys- it’s such a consistent and delicious banana bread!
Thanks for the recipe. It’s easy and delicious. I didn’t add nuts but sprinkles some oats on top of the bread. Delicious 😋. I will definitely bake it again.
My new go-to recipe for banana bread. Love that it uses oat flour and the texture is amazing!
Sometimes I skip the sugar altogether or just add about 2 tablespoons for a healthier option and it’s still sweet enough for me. Great recipe!
So good, Terri- I’m impressed you can completely omit the sugar- I feel like it needs a teeny bit to have some pleasant sweetness!
Made this yesterday and omg it’s so good! Will be making this from now on!
I love this recipe! I substituted 1/4 cup agave and 1/4 cup coconut sugar, a pinch of cinnamon and added in chocolate chips and walnuts. Very fluffy and moist.
Those are two fantastic tweaks, Ashley- thanks for taking the time to leave a comment.
This came out sooo good!! I did make some additions, I added cinnamon and allspice and just a bit more brown sugar, I added extra vanilla extract because I love it!! And I used olive oil, I think olive oil gives it a richer flavor. I also made a crumb topping which made it taste more like dessert instead of breakfast bread. Will make this again!
Using olive oil is a great alternative- I’m like you, I like the richer flavor it gives, but some of my taste testers said they could taste it haha and it that it didn’t belong in banana bread- they are the ones missing out! I love the idea of adding a crumb topping- I do something similar in my cinnamon crunch banana bread!
Love this recipe! I’ve made it at least 3 times before and it’s moist and a great texture. I usually cut the sugar in half and add some choc chips. Great healthy alternative to transitional banana bread without sacrificing flavour and texture!
Oh yes, you can definitely cut down on the sugar, especially when adding something sweet like chocolate chips. Thanks for the lovely comment, Terri!
Can I reduce oat flour but add some other flour? Like coconut?
Moist and sweet. I added some cinnamon and cloves.
Really easy delicious cake:)
Made this with my mum, and it was amazing! Super moist and flavourful. We decided to skip the walnuts, but added a touch of cinnamon for an extra kick. Loved this recipe and we will be using again, thank you!
Adding cinnamon is always a fabulous idea. Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment and I’m so glad your mom enjoyed it too 🙂
Best banana bread ever. Love the dense texture. Since I was diagnosed with diabetes, have been looking for healthier versions of recipes. I swap monkfruit sugar for regular, skip the walnuts and add dark chocolate chips. My husband literally makes this every week and I cut it in slices to store in the freezer. If you have a nutribullet of some sort, it’s super fast to grind up some oat flour. Thanks for the recipe!
Loved it!. Super soft and loved the dense texture. I swapped sugar with stevia and added some butter instead of the oil. Came out perfect. I can literally make this in bulk and freeze it.
BEST BANANA BREAD EVER!
Just made this with my young children and snuck chic chips on the top when they weren’t looking. They loved the surprise and they LOVED the Banana Bread.
Thank you for a wonderful recipe, one that is also great for cooking with children.
Love that, Katherine!
Wonderful recipe. I have better luck with consistency when using egg replacer to do muffins instead.
A couple of family favorite modifications:
1. Chocolate chips
2. A little vanilla and cinnamon
3. Substitute real maple syrup for sugar
I love those variations, Dan- chocolate chips is my personal favorite, and I’ve had a fair few other readers use maple syrup too. Thanks for taking the time to leave a lovely review.
Oats, bananas, eggs, walnuts-you guessed it! All of my so favourite ingredients! I must to try.
This is the best banana bread recipe ever. Just finished two more loaves; have made it half a dozen times and comes out consistent every time. I have to have gluten free and love using olive oil instead of butter or other oils. It stores well….when there is any left. LOL.
Hahahaha true that, Arlene!
Can I use honey instead of the sugar?
Hi Anne- you sure can! I’ve had a fair few readers in the comments do just that 🙂
I have made this four times and it is perfect every time. I think it is the best Banana Bread recipe. Even nicer that I can use olive oil and oats. I put this in my favorites recipes.
Arlene, that means so much . I’m so glad you enjoy this recipe and have made it multiple times! 🙂
My go to GF banana bread!! I add 1/3 cup of allergy friendly chocolate chips. My kids eat this for breakfast and it is gone by the end of the day
🙂 love that, Whitney!
It’s says one serving is 196 calories but how much is 1 serving??
The top of the recipe says 12 servings. Hopefully that’s correct!
R, it says 12 servings. 1 serving is 1/12th of the loaf.
O.M.G. Made a double batch in a 13″x9″ pan. We are DEVOURING it.
Love that!!!
Ever tried using coconut oil?
Yes, coconut oil works fine for this bread. Opt for refined coconut oil so there isn’t any coconut flavor 🙂
Can this be made with Coconut flour or Almond flour as an alternative?
Hi Lolita- I don’t recommend this particular one be changed- but, I do have a coconut flour banana bread recipe and an almond flour banana bread recipe, so you could make either of them if you like! 🙂
My family had no idea they were eating a gluten free treat. They loved this banana loaf, as did I.
It tastes delicious and healthy! I reduced sugar, though…
I don’t know why, but somehow, it took much longer to bake inside, so I had to cover the top with foil and baked extra 15 min. or more???
A 10/10 with a chef’s kiss👌🏻
I tried many banana bread recipes and this one’s even better than other less healthier ones!
I used MCT oil, ready oat flour and added chocolate chips instead of the walnuts. Turned out amazing!
I keep coming back to this recipe – I love it! I use maple syrup instead of brown sugar. It’s so good!
Love that, Cassidy!
I literally use this recipe once a month without fail. I make mine into mini muffins. This recipe is perfect! You can add additional things to it. I add ground flax seeds, choc chip, chia seeds. A staple at my home.
You are too kind, Chloe!
The best gluten free banana bread recipe I’ve found so far! Thank you!!!
Thanks, Natalie!
We love this bread! I make it almost weekly.
Weekly? I love to hear that, Marie- thanks for taking the time to leave a lovely review and star rating!
The best oat banana bread
i love it
Amazing recipe. I used coconut oil and pecans instead. Delicious!
Is the best banana nut bread! I’ve ever made and I’ve made it like four times.
So much for the wonderful recipe!
Best banana bread
Thanks, Phil!
Sounds amazing and less complicated than the oat flour banana bread I usually make. Will definitely try it. Just wondering what size of loaf pan I should use? Thanks!
9 x 5 inch loaf pan is great!
Amazing. I only had small bananas so I used four plus one sliced banana because I like that texture in mine. I used 1/2 brown sugar and 1/2 coconut sugar and topped with pecans because that is what I had. Flavor is amazing and not too sweet. 10/10 will make again.
Love that!!!!
The BEST oat flour banana bread recipe I’ve ever made.
This bread was amazing! It was even better than banana bread made of AP flour! I used the optional suggestion of coconut oil which gave it such a wonderful flavor and added chopped dates! This is going to be my go to recipe from now on. Thank you Arman!
Thanks for the feedback, Seema! 🙂
Great moist banana bread!
The only suggestion I would say is to add any additions such as raisins, chopped pecans/walnuts or chocolate chips to dry ingredients to be coated first before folding into wet ingredients. This helps distribute them evenly in bread otherwise they’ll tend to sink to the bottom of the bread.
This is my 5th time making this bread!
My husband has just been diagnosed as diabetic so wanted to find a lower carb treat alternative. Replaced sugar with a good artificial sweetener- interesting to hear someone left out sugar altogether- and the result was delicious. I thought it would be stodgy but it was light & crumbly. Hope my husband likes it – I had to try some before he got home to make sure it wasn’t a disaster 😉
I came across this recipe and gave it a try. It was the perfect banana bread, light and moist. I reduced the coco sugar to 1/4 cup, added a teaspoon of chia seeds, and dusted some cinnamon on top before baking. Thank you for a fab recipe!
Best banana bread I’ve ever made! I shared it with several neighbors and they also agreed!
I made my own oat flour so it was slightly chunky, which turned out great with some added texture. I also subbed honey for sugar.
Great recipe, thanks for sharing!!
I’ve tried the recipe today, perfect in every way possible! Taste, fluffiness and Preparing! Thanks alot Arman for sharing it with us! 😊
This was really good. I did add extra vanilla and a dash of cinnamon. Also subbed mini chocolate chips for the walnuts because I’m allergic. The texture was great. It feels a bit healthier than making with AP flour. May try using stevia instead of brown sugar next time to cut back further on the calories and carbs.
The best one ❤️
Thanks, Isabelle!
The best banana bread recipe I added some chocolate chips and it was delicious 😋 thanks
Very cool recipe with easy ingredients
Could I substitute 1/4 cup of the oat flour for protein powder like in your protein pumpkin bread recipe? …..which is amazing by the way. 😉
Oooo I haven’t tried that, but I can see it working!
This is a great recipe…loved it, and so easy to make!
Are you using an 8×4 or 9×5 pan?
9 x 5-inch pan!
The best banana bread recipe i’ve tried. Thank you
Could I use Applesauce instead of oil?
Haven’t tried feel free to experiment and see
Can you use oat fiber instead of oat flour? If so how do you calculate the substitution.
I haven’t tried but you are welcome to experiment and see!
Hello,
This is a great recipe! For anyone that’s interested in not using oil, I was able to get a great result substituting 1/2 cup of unsweetened applesauce. I just had to leave it in the oven for abut 50 minutes total.
Best banana bread!! Perfection!!
I used the flax eggs and it took mine almost 20 mins to gel up, but I think it’s because I used cold water. I put mine in a muffin tin with chocolate chips on top and baked them at 375 F for 20 mins. Turned out perfect!!
This recipe works very well in my cuisinart bread machine on the cake setting. Thanks!
I made this and it was fabulous. It was moist and very flavorful. My 15 year old daughter loved it. I made my own oat flour and was so easy.
I too would like to know if butter could be the oil used in this recipe.
I don’t see why not!
Yum!! I did the recipe with half the measurements and it came out absolutely delicious! Loved the recipe, it’s by far one of the best ones I’ve found!
I am pleasantly surprised by how delicious this recipe was! I made it vegan as well using a flax egg, by far the best gf & vegan recipe I have tried. Thank you for sharing.
Made this today and just had a slice. Absolutely delicious! I only had 2 medium bananas so I added a 1/2 cup applesauce. Also added a half tsp baking soda. This is going to be my goto recipe for banana but bread.
So yummy. Did half butter half coconut oil. Can’t taste the coconut oil. Only taste yummy and simple banana bread. Gets eaten fast! New go to recipe for banana bread, easy decision.
Will butter work as well as the oil? Also, instead of regular brown sugar can this be made with a natural low glycemic sweetener? I tried your blueberry muffins but subbed 1/2 of the flour with almond flour and they were GREAT! Thanks!!
So good!!!!!
I made this to try out my new oven and I had some bananas to use up. This turned out great! I added chocolate chips as my son’s girlfriend has a nut allergy. I subbed some of the oil with applesauce. Will definitely make again.
Best gluten free banana bread I’ve ever made
Thanks, Angela!
Super moist and tender!
This oat flour banana bread is fabulous! Thank you Arman, thank you! The banana bread isn’t gooey, nor is it rubbery. It’s actually lighter than flour made banana breads in my experience. I added toasted pecans to mine and it was crazy good. Ate it all by myself in about 4 days!
This is the best oat flour banana bread recipe ever!
Can I substitute the oil for peanut butter? Thanks!
I haven’t tried- Feel free to experiment and see 🙂
First time using oat flour and I’m super impressed!! Very tasty.
I used the recipe without any sugar, the result is delicious.
LOVE this recipe. Made it with monk fruit sweetener and it turned out beautifully. I like making it Sunday for breakfast-on-the-go for the week ahead.
Love the idea of having it for breakfast!
