There’s nothing like a loaf of freshly baked bread, and nothing beats my air fryer bread recipe. It’s SO easy to make and is so much faster than the oven, too. I like to slice it up and use it for avocado toast, sandwiches, or my morning toast with peanut butter.
Why I love this recipe
- Quick and easy. My 3 ingredient air fryer bread needs very little prep, no resting time, and honestly, no bread-making skills. The best part? You only need 25 minutes all up.
- BEST texture. You’ll be pleasantly surprised with how well this bread turns out from the air fryer. It has a tender crumb while being soft and fluffy in the middle.
- No yeast is needed. If you are intimidated by working with yeast or baking your own bread, don’t be. Even the most beginner of cooks can whip this up.
Key Ingredients
- All-purpose flour. Regular white flour gives this bread a gorgeous, fluffy, and soft texture. I tested this bread using wholewheat flour, and it was a little dense, so if you want to amp up the fiber or add some extra nutrients, you can sub out half the regular flour for it.
- Buttermilk. Reacts with the baking soda to give the bread some rise and keep it light and airy. This is necessary as we skip the yeast.
- Baking soda. Leavening agent to give the bread structure and stability. Please use fresh baking soda to ensure a fluffier rise.
- Optional flavor boosters. Sugar and/or salt.
How to make air fryer bread
I’ve included step-by-step photos below to make this recipe easy to follow at home. For the full printable recipe instructions and ingredient quantities, scroll to the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

Step 1- Make the dough. Whisk together the flour and baking soda, then pour in the buttermilk and mix until combined.

Step 2- Assemble. Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead several times. Shape to a ball.

Step 3- Air fry. Transfer the dough ball to an air fryer basket and air fry for 23 minutes, flip, and air fry for another 15 minutes.

Step 4- Rest. Let the bread rest for 5 minutes in the air fryer basket before removing it and slicing it.
Arman’s recipe tips
- Avoid overmixing the dough or else a ‘gluten’ will develop in the dough and in turn yield a dense and gummy loaf.
- You’ll know the bread is fully cooked when it makes a hollow noise when tapped at the base and is golden brown in color. You can also use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature, which should be 190F-200F (88-93C).
- If your bread is a little moist or soft on the base, simply flip it and air fry in 2 minute increments until firm.
Frequently asked questions
I tested this bread batter in a loaf pan and wouldn’t recommend it unless you use two pans. This dough is supposed to be more artisan style VS loaf style.
You can, but the only flour that will work is a gluten-free baking blend that contains xanthan gum. Alternative flours like amond flour, oat flour, and coconut flour will not work.
Yes, you can. Simply make a mock buttermilk by combining 1 cup of almond milk with 1/2 teaspoon of vinegar or lemon juice. Let it sit for 5 minutes to curdle.

Air Fryer Bread
Ingredients
- 3 3/4 cups all purpose flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
- 2 cups buttermilk
Instructions
- Preheat the air fryer to 180C/350F.
- Whisk together the flour and baking soda in a large bowl until combined. If using salt and sugar, fold that through. Pour the buttermilk into the dry ingredients until just combined.
- Lightly flour a kitchen surface and transfer the dough on top. Gently knead 5-6 times and shape into a ball.
- Transfer the dough to the air fryer and bake for 23-25 minutes. Flip the dough and bake for another 15 minutes or until golden on the outside and the base is hollow when knocked.
- Let the bread rest for for 5 minutes in the air fryer basket before removing onto a board and rest for another 5 minutes. Slice and serve.
Notes
- Cranberry walnut– Add 1/2 cup of roughly chopped walnuts to the dough, then fold in dried cranberries at the end.
- Cinnamon raisin– Fold through 1 teaspoon of cinnamon and 1/2 cup of soaked raisins (soak the raisins in water for 30 minutes for maximum plumpness).
- Cheese and garlic– Mince 2 cloves of garlic (or use 2 teaspoons of garlic powder) and add that to the dough, along with up to 2 cups of shredded cheese (I like a full-flavored one like Colby Jack or Tasty).
- Olives and walnuts– For a Mediterranean-style loaf, add some sliced black olives, chopped walnuts, and a tablespoon of Italian seasoning.
- Topping ideas– Keep things simple with pumpkin seeds, poppy seeds, sunflower seeds or flaxseeds. You can also fold some through the dough.
Can you replace buttermilk with soured milk
You could try!
Can you use self rising flour
You can, but omit the baking soda. The loaf will be a little more dense.
Can you make this bread in a air fryer/oven combination?
Yes, absolutely!
As soon as you posted this on Instagram I knew I had to make a loaf of air fryer bread. Wowza, it’s so quick and easy. I sprinkled some rolled oats on top.
