This high-protein cottage cheese queso dip is creamy, savory, and deceptively low-fat. It’s ready in seconds, and you can serve it as a dip with veggies or over nachos.

Using cottage cheese as the base for dips and sauces is my newfound obsession (hello, cottage cheese dip and cottage cheese alfredo!). Ever since I saw this high-protein cottage cheese queso recipe, I knew I had to try it out.
This recipe pulls double duty. It tastes like…well…queso and has a fraction of the fat and calories as the classic dip. Once you blend the cottage cheese, you get a creamy texture and bold, cheesy, Mexican-inspired flavors.

Why I love this recipe

- Versatile. I make this dip when I’m hosting and serve it warm with tortilla chips, but you could just as easily drizzle it over air fryer nachos, tacos, or fajitas!
- Hot or cold. I tested this recipe on my friends as both a hot and cold dip, and slightly more people preferred it warm (but you do you!).
- Easy to modify. I made sure to leave plenty of wiggle room in this recipe for substitutions, so feel free to adjust the flavors or ratios as you see fit.
- 3 simple ingredients. All you need is cottage cheese, taco seasonings, and cheese.

Key ingredients
- Cottage cheese. When I tested this recipe, I tried cottage cheese with every fat content, and they all yielded similarly tasty results. However, I noticed low-fat cottage cheese was slightly more watery than full-fat cottage cheese, but you can strain the excess liquid out before serving.
- Taco seasoning. For the ‘queso’ flavor. You can use a store-bought blend or make your own using the ingredients I’m including in the recipe card.
- Shredded cheese. Of all the cheeses I tried, I preferred the Mexican cheese blend and Monterey Jack. You could also use extra sharp cheddar cheese if you want a sharper dip.
How to make cottage cheese queso
I’ve included step-by-step photos below to make this recipe easy to follow at home. For the full printable recipe instructions and ingredient quantities, scroll to the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

Step 1- Blend. Blend cottage cheese and seasonings in a blender until smooth.

Step 2- Melt cheese. Pour the cottage cheese mixture into a microwave-safe bowl, add the cheese, and microwave until the cheese melts.
Step 3- Serve. Serve queso warm as desired.

Arman’s recipe tips
- Don’t have a blender? I had no trouble using a food processor, but you will want to periodically scrape down the sides of the bowl to make it smooth.
- If you’re serving the dip later, give it a good stir before serving, as it may separate.
- Garnish. For a brighter flavor, garnish with cilantro or parsley.
- Serve the dip with fresh vegetables. I usually set out a veggie tray with carrots, bell peppers, celery, and cucumbers.
Storage instructions
To store: Store the leftover queso in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.
To freeze: Transfer the dip to a freezer-safe container and freeze for 3 months. Let the dip thaw overnight in the refrigerator.
Reheating: Microwave the dip in 30-second increments or warm in a saucepan over medium low heat.
