Yes, believe it or not, you can and SHOULD be making my microwaved hard boiled eggs. They’re fast, foolproof, and turn out perfect every time!

I love hard boiled eggs, but I rarely make them because they’re so time consuming. A pot of boiling water takes upwards of 10 minutes, and I always end up getting distracted and overcooking them. 

That’s where the microwave egg method comes in handy. In under 6 minutes, you’re guaranteed tender egg whites with a soft but firm yolk.

Why I love this recipe

  • They’re fast. The exact cooking time will vary depending on the wattage of your microwave, but they always cook in a couple of minutes. 
  • Minimal effort. The microwave oven shuts off for you, so there’s little concern the eggs will overcook. 
  • Versatile. Serve them for breakfast, avocado toast, atop cobb salad, or as a healthy meal prep!
  • They’re healthy. Eggs are packed with protein and vitamins, all while being relatively low in calories and carbohydrates. Win-win-win!

Ingredients needed

  • Eggs. Four large eggs, preferably at room temperature. If they’re not at room temp, let them sit in the bowl of water for 3-4 minutes before microwaving. 
  • Salt. Just a pinch. 
  • Ice and cold water. One bowl of water is for cooking the eggs and one bowl of ice water is to shock the eggs so they stop cooking. 

How to microwave hard boiled eggs

I’ve included step-by-step photos below to make this recipe easy to follow at home. For the full printable recipe instructions and ingredient quantities, scroll to the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

Step 1- Prep. Place the eggs in a large microwave-safe bowl. Stir in one teaspoon of salt and add enough water to cover the eggs by one inch.

Step 2- Microwave. Microwave for 4 minutes on 50% power, then let them sit for one minute. Microwave for another 1 ½ minutes.

Step 3- Ice bath. Using a slotted spoon or fork, carefully transfer the eggs from the hot water to the ice water bath. Once cool enough to handle, peel and serve.

How to get a perfectly soft boiled egg

This recipe is for hard boiled eggs, but if you prefer a runny yolk, you can still achieve this in the microwave. Simply microwave the eggs for 3 minutes on 50% power, then let them sit in the warm water for 3 minutes before peeling. 

Arman’s recipe tips

  • Choose the proper container. You’ll need one large enough to submerge the eggs completely and leave an inch of water covering them.
  • Pierce the eggs with a pin. If you’re worried the eggs might explode, use a sewing needle to gently pierce a hole in the base of the eggs. I tested microwaving the eggs with and without a hole, and both methods worked for me!
  • Adjust the cooking time. My microwave is 1100 watts, which means your microwave may take more or less time. You’ll know your eggs are cooked by spinning them on the counter. If they’re wobbly, they’re still raw. 
  • Microwave in batches. If your bowl isn’t big enough for all four eggs, microwave 1-2 at a time. I find the fewer eggs you microwave, the more evenly they cook. 

Storage instructions

To store: Place leftover unpeeled eggs in an airtight container with a lid and store them in the refrigerator for up to five days. Peeled eggs will stay fresh for up to three days. 

To reheat: Place the eggs in a bowl of warm water for 15 minutes.

How to cook an egg in the microwave without it exploding?

The best way to microwave an egg is to submerge it in water and microwave it at short intervals at low power. It may also be wise to pierce the egg with a needle to release steam. 

Can you microwave hard boiled eggs without shells?

No, hard boiled eggs that have been peeled should NOT be microwaved, as they’re likely to explode.

Ingredients  

  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Instructions 

  • Place the eggs in a microwave safe bowl. Add the salt and enough water to submerge the eggs.
  • Microwave the eggs for 4 minutes on 50% of the powder, then let them sit for a minute. Microwave for another 1 1/2 minutes. 
  • Transfer the eggs to an ice bath before pealing and serving. 

Notes

  1. Love your recipes and have made many but sorry to say this one didn’t work. Follow the recipe to the T. I have the same wattage on my microwave as yours and the eggs were very undercooked. Does the container need to be small? Just big enough for the four eggs? I have one but then it doesn’t allow for an inch of water over the eggs. I’m going to try again and we’ll get back to you.
