Keto French Toast

My keto French toast is made with real sliced keto bread and just six simple ingredients. It’s golden and crisp on the outside, soft and custardy in the center, and has just 3 grams of net carbs per slice.


French toast was one of the trickiest breakfasts to recreate on a keto diet. Most low carb breads either fall apart in the custard or turn rubbery when cooked.
After retesting nearly every keto bread on the market (and my homemade keto bread), I found that the key is using a sturdy, well-structured loaf that toasts like traditional bread and absorbs the egg mixture without collapsing. This version tastes like the classic: crisp edges with a soft, custardy center. Here are a few more reasons I adore it:
- 6 simple ingredients. No specialty flours or complicated swaps.
- Ready in 10 minutes. From soaking to skillet, it’s fast enough for weekdays.
- Sturdy and freezer-friendly. Holds toppings well and reheats beautifully.
Key Ingredients
I originally shared this recipe in 2021 when very few keto breads were available on the market. Now, there are a fair few popular ones that I’ve tested and included in the notes. Full measurements are in the recipe card below.
- Keto bread. Orowheat keto bread remains my favorite grocery-store bread for French toast. I enjoyed the flavor of Nature’s Own Soft Keto Bread. My rule of thumb is if the bread toasts well and doesn’t stay soft in the middle, it’s fine to use.
- Eggs, milk, vanilla, and cinnamon. I recommend a pinch of cinnamon for a warming flavor.
- Sugar free sweetener. I typically use keto brown sugar, but allulose or monk fruit sweetener also works.
- Butter. To fry everything together. Please don’t use oil!
How to make keto French toast
Start by whisking together the eggs, milk, sweetener, cinnamon, and vanilla extract until smooth and custard-like. Next, add the butter to a non-stick pan or skillet and heat over medium. Once hot, soak the bread in the egg mixture.
Now, cook the keto toast in the pan for 3-4 minutes, flipping halfway through. Cook the remaining bread, then serve immediately.

Arman’s recipe tips
- Soak briefly. Let the bread sit in the egg mixture for about 15 to 20 seconds per side. This is long enough to absorb the custard without being fragile.
- Make French toast sticks. Cutting the bread first allows more surface area to absorb the custard, giving you a creamier center and crisp edges.
- Use heavy cream for extra richness. I find that swapping the milk for heavy cream creates a thicker custard and a more indulgent breakfast.
Topping ideas
I prefer keeping my French toast simple with a squeeze of lemon juice and a dusting of keto powdered sugar, but here are some low carb options that pair beautifully:
- Low carb berries: Strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries all add natural sweetness without spiking carbs.
- Sugar free syrups: Try keto maple syrup, keto chocolate syrup, keto caramel syrup, or even keto simple syrup.
- Nut butters: Almond, peanut, or pecan butter melt perfectly over warm slices.
Storage instructions
To store: Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator, covered, for up to 5 days.
To freeze: Place the cooled French toast in a ziplock bag and store it in the freezer for up to 2 months.
Reheating: Either microwave the toast for 20-30 seconds or reheat it on a heated non-stick pan.


Keto French Toast
Ingredients
- 8 slices keto bread 224g
- 2 large eggs 100g (no shell)
- 1 cup unsweetened almond milk 240ml, any milk works
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar substitute 15g
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 1.3g
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 2.5ml
- 1 tablespoon butter 14g, to cook the French toast
Instructions
- Separate the eight slices of bread and set aside.
- In a bowl, whisk the eggs, milk, sugar substitute, cinnamon, and vanilla extract until smooth and custard-like.
- Add butter to a non-stick pan and heat over medium. Dip the bread in the custard on both sides, and let it soak for 15 seconds on each side. Place it in the pan and cook for 3-4 minutes, flipping once.
- Serve immediately with your favorite toppings.
