My keto chocolate milk tastes like the real thing, without the sugar or bottled syrups. Just 3 ingredients and 2 grams of net carbs per serving.

There are now several keto chocolate milk options available in grocery stores, but many rely heavily on cream and pre-sweetened syrups. While flavorful, they’re often expensive and are more like dessert shakes than traditional milk.

After testing different milk bases and sweetener ratios, I landed on a simple three-ingredient combination that keeps total carbs low while maintaining a smooth, pourable texture.

Since first publishing this recipe in 2020, I’ve retested it with newer sweeteners to ensure the texture stays creamy. It’s easy to make, contains just 2 net carbs per glass, and delivers the classic chocolate milk flavor most of us grew up with!

Key Ingredients

Here’s what goes into low carb chocolate milk, along with my kitchen notes. Full measurements are in the recipe card below.

  • Unsweetened almond or coconut milk. I’ve tested this milk with both almond and coconut milk and enjoy them both. Use your favorite milk of choice.
  • Cocoa powder. Unsweetened cocoa powder. Be sure to sift it first to ensure there are no clumps.
  • Powdered sweetener. Mixes into the milk much more easily than a granulated sweetener. I used keto powdered sugar. I recently retested it with keto maple syrup and keto simple syrup, and both options mix seamlessly into the milk.

How to make keto chocolate milk

In a high-speed blender, add your milk of choice with cocoa powder and blend until combined. Next, add the powdered sweetener (or liquid sweetener) and blend once more until combined.

Now, pour into a tall glass filled with ice, or cover and refrigerate for later.

Arman’s recipe tips

  • Adjust the cocoa amount. If you prefer a richer chocolate flavor, you can scale up the cocoa amount by about 1/2 to 1 tablespoon.
  • Add protein. For a high-protein chocolate milk, add 1/4 cup (32 grams) of your favorite low-carb unflavored or chocolate protein powder.

How to store leftovers

Leftover chocolate milk should be stored in the fridge, and it will keep for up to 5 days.

I added more powdered sweetener and some vanilla, and since I’d just bought a new jar of peanut butter I scooped the last of the old jar into it, and then it wasn’t cold enough so I added some ice, and then I remembered I had a third of a tub of Mammoth peanut butter chocolate keto ice cream which tastes just like ice but is way more expensive and added that too. Pretty darn good!

    1. LOVE the peanut butter idea, Ajax! You’ve completely transformed this into a ridiculously delicious sounding shake combining two of my favorite things 🙂

  2. I just blended a batch of this recipe. As someone else mentioned I too found it very chocolatey. However, it is not as sweet as I expected which could be due to the sweetener I used. I really like the recipe and am looking forward to tweaking the sweetener to my taste. Thank you.

I just made my third batch of this. Love it! Sometimes I crave just a little something sweet after dinner and this is perfect. First time I made it, I thought it had too much cocoa powder, but it grew on me so I kept using the full amount.

    1. Love to hear that, Jen. I hear you- it does sound like a fair bit of cocoa powder but the longer it sits, the less pronounced it becomes unless its a solid amount 🙂
