Why I love this superman ice cream recipe

Arman Liew

The number of kids in my friend group has been steadily increasing over the last few years, which means I’ve had to branch out and make more kid-friendly desserts. Lately, ice cream has been at the top of my mind.

Of all the ice cream recipes I’ve been playing around with, this Superman ice cream has risen to the top of my friends’ must-make lists. If you’re unfamiliar, this tri-colored ice cream was created in an ice cream parlor in the Midwest United States. It’s made using the three signature colors of everyone’s favorite DC comics superhero: red, blue, and yellow.

It’s favored among kids for its vibrant color scheme, but alas, beneath the vibrant hues is a simple vanilla ice cream base. It took some testing to figure out how much food coloring to use (a little goes a long way!), but I was able to create a no-churn recipe with only three ingredients for the base, plus all the fun colors.

Key Ingredients

superman ice cream ingredients.
  • Whipping cream. Also known as heavy cream or double cream, I highly suggest using the full-fat variety as it yields creamier results.
  • Condensed milk. Adds sweetness and thickness.
  • Vanilla extract. To add a subtle flavor throughout.
  • Food coloring. Red, blue, and yellow food coloring.

How to make Superman ice cream

I’ve included step-by-step photos below to make this recipe easy to follow at home. For the full printable recipe instructions and ingredient quantities, scroll to the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

Step 1- Prep. Place the loaf pan and mixing bowl in the freezer for 30 minutes.

Step 2- Make the ice cream base. Once chilled, remove the bowl from the freezer. Using an electric mixer, beat the heavy cream until stiff peaks form. In a separate bowl, whisk together the condensed milk and vanilla extract.

Step 3- Combine ingredients. Gradually fold through the condensed milk mix into the whipped cream.

Step 4- Add color. Evenly distribute the ice cream mix amongst 3 small bowls. Add food coloring to each one and mix well.

Step 5- Finish and freeze. Remove the loaf pan from the freezer and drop dollops of each color throughout. Cover the pan and place it back into the freezer until frozen and easy to scoop.

What if I don’t want vanilla ice cream?

While the traditional flavor of this ice cream is vanilla, you can add flavor extracts to the different colors to change it up. Here are some ideas:

  • Blue – Blueberry, blue vanilla, and blue raspberry.
  • Red – Cherry, strawberry, bubblegum, and black cherry.
  • Yellow – Lemon, banana, and custard.

Arman’s recipe tips

  • Go easy on the food coloring. Through recipe testing, I’ve noticed the ice cream will naturally darken as it cools, so avoid adding more than one teaspoon of each color.
  • Chill the cream. Just like freezing the bowls in advance, using cold cream and condensed milk will make blending the ice cream way easier.
  • Add mix-ins. Why stop at the fun colors? Add some mini marshmallows, chocolate chips, or cookie chunks!

Storage instructions

To freeze: Store leftover ice cream in a freezer-safe container and freeze for up to 1 month. Avoid refreezing, as it will lead to the formation of ice crystals.

  1. Hi there,
I just have a question: I understand all your recipes are based on Keto so how can you use condensed milk to make ice cream, it is full of sugar! Can you get keto condensed milk in Oz?

Thanks, I have tried quite a few of your recipes.
