I love chocolate, well, anything. And when I’m going low carb, my sugar free hot cocoa mix is a lifesaver.
For starters, it doesn’t taste like anything is missing because nothing is. It has the same warming flavor and creamy texture, but with a few low carb swaps, it would put Swiss Miss hot cocoa mix to shame!

Why I love this recipe

- Easy to make in batches. Once you learn the ratio of ingredients, you can make as much or as little hot cocoa mix as you need.
- Customizable. Customize any of the 4 ingredients, or add your spin on it.
- Diet-friendly. Along with being keto friendly, it’s also easy to make dairy-free!
Ingredients needed
- Cocoa powder. I used Dutch-processed cocoa powder, which has a softer, milder flavor. Use dark cocoa powder if you prefer a bitter, dark chocolate flavor.
- Granulated sweetener. I use monk fruit extract or allulose, but use whatever sugar-free sweetener you prefer.
- Sea salt. To amplify the other ingredients.
- Powdered creamer. Use either powdered milk or powdered creamer. To keep it vegan, use powdered coconut milk.
How to make sugar free hot chocolate
I’ve included step-by-step photos below to make this recipe easy to follow at home. For the full printable recipe instructions and ingredient quantities, scroll to the recipe card at the bottom of this post.
Step 1- Combine ingredients. Combine all the ingredients in a mixing bowl. Transfer to a glass jar or airtight container, seal with the lid, and store at room temperature.
Step 2- Make hot chocolate. Add 2 tablespoons of the hot cocoa mix to a large mug then add hot water and mix until completely dissolved. Add heated milk of choice and mix very well.
Arman’s recipe tips
- Add flavor. Fold in some cinnamon, cardamom, or chili powder for a spicy kick.
- Make ultra-creamy hot cocoa. Swap the water for heavy cream.
- Don’t forget the toppings. A little keto whipped cream and sugar-free chocolate syrup will instantly elevate a humble mug of hot cocoa!
Storage instructions
To store: Any unused hot cocoa mix can be stored in an airtight container for up to six months.
Frequently asked questions
Unless you can find dehydrated marshmallows, I don’t recommend adding them to the mix, as they will simply melt once the hot water is added.

Ingredients

Instructions
To make the mix
- Combine the cocoa powder, sweetener, salt, and powdered creamer in a mixing bowl and stir until combined. Transfer to a jar or airtight container.
To make a single cup of cocoa/hot chocolate
- Add 2 tablespoons of dry mix (non creamer/milk version) to a large mug or cup. Add hot water and mix until completely dissolved. Add heated milk of choice and mix very well. Top with optional whipped topping and enjoy!

This is a great find for us. Hubby has just been diagnosed T2 diabetesand we just had another “it will kill you” argument over 12 grams sugar per cup (all anyone should have in one day) in the cocoa mix we used to like. We were buying Swiss Miss for my brother…whose tastebuds are obviously non existent.
We had run out of all the stock we had and I said no way we were going to pay what they want now for it…..when it’s just crap grade ingredients and chemicals.
I made this recipe for him using full fat Nido and 1/2 Organic cacao 1/2 Organic European cocoa powder.
Knocked his socks off. Thanks.

Here’s my version of this… souped up a little… not overly sweet either:
Diabetic Hot Cocoa
4 1/2 c. splenda/sucralose (fluffy so is not the same density as sugar)
2 1/2 c. unsweetened cocoa powder (8 oz can)
3 c. dry whole milk (nestle’ nido)
2 c. dry sugar free french vanilla creamer
3 1/4 c. dry vanilla powder
5 tbs. salt
Whisk all ingredients together for 3 minutes. Store in an airtight container. Use 3 heaping tbsp per 10 oz cup of water.
Remember:
– Add salt last. If test cup is salty, you did not mix enough.
– Sucralose is not as dense as sugar, so you need more for the same
sweetness.
– Cocoa powder is quite strong. Use less of this than any other
product in this mix.
– Sugar Free French vanilla enhances the sweet flavor without blood
sugar spikes.
– Watkins sells a dry vanilla powder. It’s avilable at Walmart.
– Mix center of bowl first. Then flower mix the outer edges. Then
swipe side to side and up and down.
– Always use a whisk for mixing.
– Nestle’ Nido whole milk powder is in most stores. Check Latino
section. Whole milk has fewer carbs than non-fat milk.
This is a great take on your recipe. You can substitute Sugar Free French Vanilla for any other flavors that are sugar free and dry. Thanks for the idea to work with.

Hi! I am wanting to make this (I might have gestational diabetes and I’m looking at a keto diet to keep me off of meds for the duration of my pregnancy) I am wondering if I add the milk powder I would just add water.. and if I don’t add the milk powder I could use my heated milk of choice. Is that correct? I am getting a little confused reading through the recipe. Do you think adding the milk powder and using a heated milk of choice would be overkill?
Absolutely! I actually prefer using the heated milk of choice as I can make it as creamy or thinner as I want 🙂
I tried it with Hershey cocoa powder, Stevia and heated Almond milk.
No matter how many packets of Stevia I put in, it tasted bitter with a nasty after taste.
I dunno maybe a different cocoa powder, I didn’t like this.

Do you have a 1 cup version I could try before making this amount? I don’t want to waste all of the ingredients and decide I don’t like it.
Is there a way to modify this recipe and make it “just add water” We do lots of winter camping or ski in picnics and bringing in liquid milks just isn’t an option. I would love a healthier hot cocoa mix for my kids though!

I’ve read some reviews of the Lakanto MONKFRUIT having no sweet flavor or bland.
At the price for a small amount I’ll probably try it with a Stevia blend.

11/4 cup of sweetener? I have monk fruit extract powder. How would I measure that since I dont have a cup that’s 11/4ths, lol!

Niki has a box coming her way…all the way from America! And guess what’s in it? A partially opened box of hot chocolate mix dated 2014. That’s how often I use the stuff! It always sounds so good, but like you I end up finding that it’s way too sweet for my tastes. If I’m craving something hot on a cold afternoon, I usually turn to coffee instead. And if it’s the holidays, then maybe I’ll splurge and add a shot of Bailey’s. Or whiskey. (That depends whether the in-laws are in town. Hah!) Love the sugar-free version you created here, mate.
