I love chocolate, well, anything. And when I’m going low carb, my sugar free hot cocoa mix is a lifesaver.
For starters, it doesn’t taste like anything is missing because nothing is. It has the same warming flavor and creamy texture, but with a few low carb swaps, it would put Swiss Miss hot cocoa mix to shame!

Why I love this recipe
- Made with 4 ingredients. Unlike the store-bought variety, mine has no sucralose, artificial flavors, or acesulfame potassium–whatever that is…
- Easy to make in batches. Once you learn the ratio of ingredients, you can make as much or as little hot cocoa mix as you need.
- Customizable. Customize any of the 4 ingredients, or add your spin on it.
- Diet-friendly. Along with being keto friendly, it’s also easy to make dairy-free!

Ingredients needed
- Cocoa powder. I used Dutch-processed cocoa powder, which has a softer, milder flavor. Use dark cocoa powder if you prefer a bitter, dark chocolate flavor.
- Granulated sweetener. I use monk fruit extract or allulose, but use whatever sugar-free sweetener you prefer.
- Sea salt. To amplify the other ingredients.
- Powdered creamer. Use either powdered milk or powdered creamer. To keep it vegan, use powdered coconut milk.
How to make sugar free hot chocolate
I’ve included step-by-step photos below to make this recipe easy to follow at home. For the full printable recipe instructions and ingredient quantities, scroll to the recipe card at the bottom of this post.
Step 1- Combine ingredients. Combine all the ingredients in a mixing bowl. Transfer to a glass jar or airtight container, seal with the lid, and store at room temperature.
Step 2- Make hot chocolate. Add 2 tablespoons of the hot cocoa mix to a large mug then add hot water and mix until completely dissolved. Add heated milk of choice and mix very well.

Arman’s recipe tips
- Add flavor. Fold in some cinnamon, cardamom, or chili powder for a spicy kick.
- Make ultra-creamy hot cocoa. Swap the water for heavy cream.
- Don’t forget the toppings. A little keto whipped cream and sugar-free chocolate syrup will instantly elevate a humble mug of hot cocoa!
Storage instructions
To store: Any unused hot cocoa mix can be stored in an airtight container for up to six months.

Frequently asked questions
Unless you can find dehydrated marshmallows, I don’t recommend adding them to the mix, as they will simply melt once the hot water is added.

Only 1 ingredients missing…. Watkins or Flavors Gourmet dry vanilla powder. Only sold online, as local or box grocery stores pitched it off their shelves. You might find it at Halal grocers. Add 1 tbsp of dry vanilla powder. More, if you need a milder and sweeter flavor without extra sweetneners added. The flavored creamers help slightly. But not enough sometimes. Diabetics…. NIDO whole milk is your friend here. Less carbs from the milk or creamers. Even plain creamers elevate blood sugar by corn sugars (maltodextrin) added. If you can find powdered half and half, that is best for diabetics. Cream has the fewest carbs. More fat, less carbs.
Wow! I’ve been looking for a good substitute to the expensive store bought cocoa mix I currently use. Your recipe tastes soooooo much better and is much cheaper!
Thanks so much Kathy! So glad you enjoyed this one, and perfect time of year for it.
Anyone make this with no powdered milk or cream?
Hi there, you can certainly omit the powdered milk or cream! When you’re ready for a hot chocolate, dissolve the mix in a small amount of hot water and then add your warmed milk of choice 🙂
I had high hopes for this hot cocoa recipe, but there wasn’t any sweetness at all and it tasted like I was drinking plain cocoa. I used everything you had in your recipe, but again, there was no pleasant taste at all. I used a blend of monk fruit and allulose, but there wasn’t any sweetness at all.
Hi Laura, sorry to hear that. Unfortunately, different sweeteners will have different levels of sweetness. The good thing is, you can just add more sweetener until you’ve balanced the cocoa to your own liking 🙂
Thank you for this recipe to help me avoid adding artificial liquid creamers to my coffee. I added a heaping teaspoonful of this hot chocolate mix to my instant coffee this morning along with soy milk and it was quite good. I had never used coconut milk powder before.
Get the Friendly Farms Plant Based Almond Non-Dairy Whipped Topping (Aldi) and top your cocoa off with it. Perfection.
What do you mean by the “version” using powdered milk or creamer? I see only 1 recipe, no versions and it calls for powdered milk or creamer.
Thanks for spotting this Julie, I’ve made this more clear now.
Thank you so much. I decided to look up monk fruit lakanto with alluslose and they are safe for someone with digestive issues like me. I am going to try this recipe next week after I go grocery shopping! Much appreciated!

You’re very welcome! So glad you’re enjoying the sugar free recipes Marcia.
So good and you can’t tell it’s sugar free!
I used trivia for the sweetner and Hershey cocoa powder. Yum!
Needed a little more sweetness to me and my husband.
Sugar free Chocolate sounds good
Let us know if you give it a try Sue!
The blend of suggested ingredients is wonderful. I used Monk Fruit and powdered French Vanilla Coffee Mate with zero sugar.
The mix completely dissolved in the hot water and it tastes great.
Thank you very much for this recipe 😊
It turned out delicious. So easy to make. Much better than store bought (and much cheaper) and I love that it is sweetener and not sugar.
I love this recipe. I omited the powdered milk and added my chocolate protein power.
Oh I love that idea!!!
What chocolate protein powder were you able to use? Mine usually clots up in hot water, Thanks!
Best diabetic hot chocolate I’ve ever tasted. Even my daughter who isn’t diabetic. Likes it more than all other hot chocolate.
