My air fryer hash browns turn out crispy and golden, and they take a fraction of the cook time as the oven or deep fryer. Use fresh OR frozen hash browns.

Why I love this recipe

I love surprising my partner with homemade hash browns, but if I can have them ready in half the time and still turn out perfect, I’m all ears.

Using the air fryer gives you extra-crispy hash browns while the insides stay soft and fluffy. Here’s why you should make them:

Arman Liew

Quick. Compared to oven-baking or deep-frying, these hash browns cook in just 8 minutes.

Works with fresh or frozen. I tested these side by side with store-bought frozen patties and homemade ones, and the results were identical.

Foolproof. No hot oil splattering, no uneven browning, and no babysitting the pan- the air fryer does it all.

Minimal oil. A little cooking spray is all that’s needed to get the perfect flavor and texture.

Key Ingredients

Here’s what goes into air fried hash browns, along with my kitchen notes. Full measurements are in the recipe card below.

  • Shredded hash browns. I used frozen patties, but you can make your own (see my homemade hash browns) with shredded potatoes, potato starch, and some spices. If you make your own, I suggest using russet potatoes rather than Yukon Golds, which are less starchy.
  • Cooking spray. Use a non-aerosol oil spray- avocado oil or olive oil works well. Jan, in the comments, correctly flagged that aerosol sprays like Pam can damage the non-stick coating on your air fryer basket over time. A silicone brush with a little oil works just as well.

How to make air fryer hash browns

Step 1- Prep. Preheat the air fryer to 190C/380F and lightly grease it with cooking spray. Add a single layer of hash brown patties.

Step 2- Air fry for 8-10 minutes, flipping halfway through. Continue cooking until they’re crispy and golden.

Arman’s recipe tips

  • Keep the hash browns in an even layer. If not, they won’t get equal access to the heat and become crispy. If they overlap, the steam gets trapped between them, and you end up with soft, soggy patches instead of an even crisp.
  • Season the hash browns. If you’re using scratch-made hash browns, remember to add some spices. I usually use salt, black pepper, onion powder, and garlic powder.
  • Add diced onion. Fold in finely diced onion into the hash brown mixture to add an extra layer of flavor.

What to serve with these

Hash browns make the perfect breakfast pairing alongside over-medium eggs, air fryer soft-boiled eggs, air fryer bacon, or as a side to a crustless quichesausage McMuffins, or egg white omelets. I sometimes cook these while also cooking air fryer hard boiled eggs.

Storage instructions

To store: Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-5 days.

To freeze: If the hash browns are already pre-frozen/pre-cooked, avoid re-freezing them. If they’re fresh, allow them to cool, then store them in a freezer-safe bag in the freezer for up to 3 months.

Reheating: Reheat them in the air fryer at 350°F for 2 minutes, until warm.

Frequently asked questions

Is this recipe gluten-free?

Yes, this recipe is gluten-free because none of the ingredients contains gluten. However, be sure to check the packaging to ensure the hash brown patties weren’t prepared in a facility that also prepares foods that contain wheat, etc.

  • Air fryer home fries– The diner-style breakfast potatoes I make alongside these hash browns.
  • Air fryer bread– Crispy on the outside, soft in the middle, and perfect for toasting.
  • Air fryer French toast– Thick, custardy, and better than any diner version I’ve tried.
  • Air fryer pancakes– Yes, you can make thick and fluffy pancakes in the air fryer. I tested this many times to get it just right.

  1. 5 stars
Been doing them in air fryer several years now. Mine has toaster oven on top and big air fryer on bottom! Ninja! Spray my patties with air fryer spray. Cook them at 450 at half the time, much crispier!

    1. Thanks for the feedback, C.J.! I LOVE that Ninja air fryer. I’ll try out your method next weekend 🙂

  2. I am surprised the potato companies haven’t started putting air fryer instructions on their bags! I have tried crinkle fries at 10 minutes and they turn out great. I am going to get me some of these next grocery trip – didn’t even think about them.

Please note, though, that the aerosol cooking sprays like Pam will eventually cause the coated surface of your air fryer basket to chip off. I put a bit of avocado oil in a small bowl and brush it on with a silicone brush, though actually with the fries I never use any oil as they are coated already. Just a tip gleaned from lots of people who had this problem!

    Nonaerosol sprays may be okay.
