This almond flour mug cake is super moist and fluffy and full of rich chocolate flavor! It bakes in just one minute and satisfies the sweet tooth!
We love our mug cake and mug muffin recipes on here. On repeat, we have cinnamon roll in a mug, vanilla mug cake, and a protein mug cake.
After finding some leftover almond flour on hand, I wanted to make a classic chocolate mug cake using almond flour!

Why you’ll love this recipe
- Ridiculously easy. In under 5 minutes, you’ll have this mug cake prepped, cooked, and eaten.
- Naturally gluten-free and low carb. Thanks to the almond flour, this mug cake is naturally lower in net carbs and suitable for celiacs (like our keto mug cake recipe).
- Rich and moist. Like our classic chocolate mug cake, this absolutely nails the texture and flavor.
- Single serving perfection. Sure, you could make my almond flour chocolate cake (which is incredible!), but if you want something right this second to satisfy your cravings, this single-serving version is your answer.
Almond Flour Mug Cake Ingredients
- Almond Flour. I like using blanched or superfine almond flour. These are most similar to whole wheat or white flour (while remaining grain-free!).
- Cocoa Powder. Dutch-processed cocoa or dark cocoa powder. Avoid cacao powder as it is a little too grainy.
- Baking powder. Gives the mug cake some rise and fluffiness.
- Maple syrup. Adds some sweetness. Agave or honey will also work.
- Almond Butter. Using nut butter instead of butter or coconut oil makes things a little healthier but also adds some subtle flavor.
Substitute tip
Any nut or seed butter can replace almond butter, including peanut butter, cashew butter, tahini, or sunflower seed butter.
- Milk. Any milk works, including almond milk, coconut milk, or whole milk.
- Vanilla extract.
- Chocolate Chips. Optional, but what is a chocolate flavored mug cake without extra chocolate?
How to make an almond flour mug cake
- Prep. Grease a microwave-safe ramekin or cereal bowl with cooking spray and set aside.
- Make the batter. In a small bowl, combine your dry ingredients and stir well. Add your almond butter and coconut milk and mix until a thick batter remains. Fold in your chocolate chips (and any other add-ins of choice).
- Microwave. Transfer your mug cake batter to the greased ramekin/cereal bowl. Place in the microwave and microwave for 1-2 minutes or until just set. Remove from the microwave and let sit for 1 minute before enjoying.
Tips to make the best recipe
- Use only smooth and drippy nut or seed butter. If you use a crunchy or homemade blend, it will not bake as well.
- If your cake batter is a little too thick, add an extra tablespoon or two of milk.
- For a more gooey and soft chocolate mug cake, you can cut the baking time. The batter has no eggs, so it is safe to eat!
- Feel free to add some other ingredients to the batter, like raspberries, berries, or nuts!
Variations
- Add mix-ins. Pecans, walnuts, and chocolate chips are all fabulous options.
- Frost it. Spread some chocolate frosting on the prepped mug cake for something truly decadent.
- Make it dairy-free. Use non-dairy milk and opt for dairy free chocolate chips.
- Serve with ice cream. How do you elevate some chocolate cake? Add a scoop or two of vanilla ice cream.
Storage instructions
Mug cakes should be made fresh and enjoyed immediately. You can, however, store the dry ingredients mixed together for up to 6 months. When ready to assemble, simply add your wet ingredients and you are good to go!
Recommended tools to make this recipe

Frequently asked questions
No, this mug cake won’t work with coconut flour instead of almond flour. The former is too absorbant and will yield a dry mug cake.

I make mug cake very often but never used almond flour. Will try to see consistency.
Best mug cake ever!
I never bought almond flour; but I have many almonds. I read online you can make almomd flour very easily. So will just blend them!
Hi I will try the almond flour mug cake today. It’s my daughter’s birthday today so want to make it special. Will put a bit of peanut butter.
Thank you.
Love it! The second time I made it, I doubled the recipe and it didn’t set. I would recommend doubling the recipe in a wider-based mug.
Mmmm
Used hazelnut flour and coffee instead of milk. Chocolate coffee hazelnut bomb. Thank you!
Thanks, Carla!
YUM! will be making this again
Please do!!
Absolutely delicious. I added a small amount of allulose to sweeten
Love that!
This was easy and delicious!
My first mug cake and it’s so good! Hit the spot after a long run this morning. Thanks!
This is lovely, better than using eggs imo as the eggs if you over cookem a little bit ir dont mix really really well you can get kinda gross lumps of an eggy taste xD…or the texture is just bad.
I do use 2 Tbs of maple syrup and like 1-2Tbs of water instead of milk (If I have milk I’d use it) just to make it sweet enough for my taste.
Curbs chocolate craving…in hopes of making the day better…anyways thanks!!
This recipe is perfect as written. Satisfies a chocolate craving!
Moist and very tasty, although I substituted peanut butter for almond butter. I also added a few more chocolate chips. Wicked!
The first time I made this it didn’t set , so the second time I added 1 egg and it was good .
Your keto mug cakes have been helping me a lot in my candidia diet! Could i bake this in the oven?
Sure can!
Wow! This is delicious. I was looking for a simple mug cake recipe and found yours. Due to some sensitivities I used sunflower flour and tahini and it was still fantastic. Thank you!
This was delicious! I skipped the coco powder and made it with chocolate chips and it reminded me of a chocolate chip cookie. Will be making this again!
This was great!
I’ve been craving a brownie for 2 weeks (since hubby and I started keto). We have had a heat wave all week and I did not want to run the oven.
I love black-bottom brownies, so I added a few bits of cream cheese on top when it came out of the microwave. Just that little extra bit of gooeyness.
Thank you! SO YUM 🙂
Yummy! Mine came out fudgey, super delish! I used honey bc I didn’t have sugar on hand
Simple, healthy, and delicious!!! My only negative comment is that mine looks nothing like the pictures, but who cares when it tastes amazing!😂
Thanks for the recipe:)
Thank you for this recipe! I rarely eat chocolate due to digestive issues so I use carob powder and carob chips. I always have oat flour so that’s what I use. I’ve used both brown and coconut sugar and both cow and oat milk- all have worked successfully. In my 1000 watt microwave 45 seconds is perfect. Love your site! Keep up the good work!
This recipe is incredible! I used coconut milk and cashew butter instead of almond and didn’t use any sweetener, rather used vanilla paste which is already sweetened and it came out brilliantly. Served with blueberries and blackberries. A quick and easy treat/ breakfast. Thank you☺️
So welcome!
How do you get such a nice crackly top? What’s the secret?!
Perfect! Thank you so much for this recipe!
I used regular butter instead of almond butter and monk fruit sweetener instead of sugar.
Pretty good 🙂 I’m not keto, I was just looking for something with almond flour, so I used plain old sugar. It wasn’t very firm and kinda creamy almost but it tasted good!
That’s good to hear ! 🙂
Just made a couple for my husband and myself. They were really easy and very rich. Topped them with coconut whipped topping. My husband said this recipe is a keeper!
Wondering if a 6oz or an 8oz bowl would work better. Thanks
Hi! I often recommend using slightly bigger, just to avoid potential overflow 🙂
So good! I didnt have chocolate so used some cinnamon instead and its awesome. Thank you
I like using powdered stevia – how much would I use? If I wanted to bake a larger cake in the oven, could I simply do, say, 4 x the ingredients?
I’ve only tried it as written and with these ingredients, feel free to experiment and see 🙂
Dunno what I did wrong, but it took about half hour in the oven. Tastes great though, nice and chocolatey and gooey. I’d definitely make again. Thanks for the recipe!
Quite good and soooo quick and easy to make,
Great to hear, Emme!
I just tried this, and will definitely make it again! It was delicious! The batter was more crumbly than cakey, but it was still good. I put an “enlightened” ice cream bar in the mug and topped it all with some sugarfree whipped cream. Thanks for sharing!
That sounds fabulous!
Very yummy. Thanks for sharing. I used cashew butter and milk but it tastes great. Only mine didn’t rise
i want the recipes for the other mug cakes u mentioned, besides the choc. Thanks!
