My keto honey mustard recipe needs just 4 ingredients and 2 minutes to make. It’s so smooth, creamy, and tangy- I always keep some on hand!

Let’s be real; when it comes to fried foods and savory appetizers, the best part of the dish is the dipping sauce. In my house, that means plenty of honey mustard.

With the same sweet, tangy, bold flavor as regular honey mustard, this sugar-free version is just as satisfying- but without the sugar.

Since honey is a key ingredient, it isn’t keto-friendly. Moreover, many mainstream brands sneak in added sugar. Luckily, making your own is easy. I did a few tests to work out which sweeteners worked and which made it taste artificial, and the final result would make you think it’s the real deal!

Why make my sugar free honey mustard

Arman Liew
  • 4 ingredients. And they’re all basic kitchen pantry staples.
  • Easy to make. There’s no simmering, chill time, nada. Just mix everything together and use it right away.
  • Customizable. Add as much sweetener as you want, or swap the mustard for a totally different flavor.
  • It goes with everything. From keto chicken tenders to keto onion rings to honey mustard chicken, you can use this exactly as you would regular honey mustard.

Key Ingredients

Here’s what goes into the sauce, along with kitchen notes. Measurements are in the recipe card below.

  • Keto honey. I use a homemade keto honey substitute that contains no sugar or actual honey. I know it’s extra effort to make, but it is a fraction of the cost of store-bought brands (literally), and you can use it in tons of my other keto recipes.
  • Mayonnaise. Adds creaminess and richness to the mustard. You can omit it if you want a firmer, thicker sauce.
  • Yellow mustard OR Dijon mustard. I prefer Dijon mustard because it gives it a creamier texture, but yellow mustard can also be used.
  • White vinegar. Just a pinch to bring out the tangy flavors. Apple cider vinegar and fresh lemon juice will also work.

How to make keto honey mustard

Step 1- Combine ingredients. In a mixing bowl, whisk all the ingredients until smooth. If you want it sweeter, add extra honey. If you want it extra tangy, add more mustard.

Step 2- Store. Transfer it into a sealable container or a sterilized jar.

My favorite ways to use this sauce

You can use this sugar-free honey mustard exactly as you would regular honey mustard. Personally, I find it best as a dipping sauce for veggies or keto French fries, or as a sauce for a keto sandwich or burger. If you thin out the sauce, it makes a great dressing for this spinach bacon salad or for keto potato salad in place of Dijon.

Arman’s recipe tips

  • Use any type of mustard. As I mentioned, I prefer the tang and texture of Dijon mustard, but any kind will do. Just make sure it has no added sugar.
  • Avoid using liquid stevia. I’ve tested this recipe with liquid stevia, and it made the sauce quite bitter, so stick to keto honey that’s made with sweeteners like allulose (my favorite) or monk fruit.
  • Make a thinner sauce. To make a thinner sauce that’s better as salad dressing, thin it with unsweetened almond milk or water.
  • Cut the fat. For a lower-fat honey mustard, swap the mayonnaise for nonfat Greek yogurt and add ½ teaspoon of salt; it will only stay fresh for up to 5 days.
  • Add spices. To infuse more flavor, add one teaspoon of garlic powder or onion powder.

Storage instructions

To store: Honey mustard should be refrigerated and covered. The mustard will keep well for up to 4 weeks.

To freeze: Place leftover honey mustard in a shallow container and store it in the freezer for up to 6 months.

Frequently asked questions

What if I don’t have keto honey?

If you don’t want to make keto honey from scratch, I have recently tested a new workaround. Add half a tablespoon of granulated allulose or a drop of liquid monk fruit (make sure there is no bitter aftertaste). Add a drop of honey extract (very important) and mix into the remaining ingredients. If it isn’t sweet enough, adjust the sweetness to taste.

“This sugar free honey mustard is a fantastic option for those who love the sauce but don’t want the excess sugar. There’s also an option to keep it virtually fat-free.” – Felicia Newell, MScAHN, RD, CPT.

We decided to make Alice Springs Chicken for dinner and needed honey mustard dressing that is of course, keto friendly. I came across this recipe so we decided to try it out. It’s absolutely delicious and is now a regular staple in this household as well as many other of your recipes.
