These air fryer hash browns turn out crispy and golden, and they take a fraction of the cook time as the oven or deep fryer. Use fresh OR frozen hash browns!

I love surprising my family with freshly baked hash browns, but if I can have them ready in half the time but still turn out perfect, I’m all ears.
By using the air fryer, you get extra crispy hash browns while the insides stay soft and fluffy.

Why I love this recipe
- Quick. Compared to oven baking or deep frying, these hash browns cook in no time.
- Works with fresh or frozen hash browns. Use store-bought frozen patties or make homemade hash browns. It’s up to you!
- Foolproof. With the magic of the air fryer, you’ll never have to worry about how they’ll turn out.
- WAY less oil. A little cooking spray is all that’s needed to get the perfect flavor and texture.
- A healthy side dish. Potatoes are an excellent source of fiber, and minimal oil means they’re low in calories!
Ingredients needed
- Shredded hash browns. I used frozen patties, but you can make your own (see my homemade hash browns) with shredded potatoes, potato starch, and some spices. If you make your own, I suggest using russet potatoes over the less-starchy Yukon gold potatoes.
- Cooking spray. I used olive oil spray, but you can use any neutral-flavored oil spray, like avocado oil, canola oil, or vegetable oil.
How to make air fryer hash browns
I’ve included step-by-step photos below to make this recipe easy to follow at home. For the full printable recipe instructions and ingredient quantities, scroll to the recipe card at the bottom of this post.
Step 1- Prep. Preheat the air fryer to 190C/380F and lightly grease it with cooking spray. Add a single layer of hash brown patties.
Step 2- Air fry for 8-10 minutes, flipping halfway through. Continue cooking until they’re crispy and golden.
Arman’s recipe tips
- Keep the hash browns in an even layer. If not, they won’t get equal access to the head and become crispy.
- Season the hash browns. If you’re using scratchmade hash browns, remember to add some spices. I usually use salt, black pepper, onion powder, and garlic powder.
- Add diced onion. Fold in finely diced onion into the hash brown mixture to add an extra layer of flavor.
What to serve with these
Hash browns make the perfect breakfast pairing alongside over medium eggs. air fryer soft boiled eggs, and air fryer bacon or as a side to a crustless quiche, sausage McMuffins, or egg white omelettes.
Storage instructions
To store: Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-5 days.
To freeze: If the hash browns are already pre-frozen/pre-cooked, avoid re-freezing them. If they’re fresh, allow them to cool and store them in a freezer-safe bag in the freezer for up to three months.
Reheatng: Reheat them in the air fryer until warm.
Frequently asked questions
Yes, this recipe is gluten-free because none of the ingredients contains gluten. However, be sure to check the packaging to ensure the hash brown patties weren’t prepared in a facility that also prepares foods that contain wheat, etc.

This was so good!
You make everything seem so easy! Tasty and delicious too!😋
I am surprised the potato companies haven’t started putting air fryer instructions on their bags! I have tried crinkle fries at 10 minutes and they turn out great. I am going to get me some of these next grocery trip – didn’t even think about them.
Please note, though, that the aerosol cooking sprays like Pam will eventually cause the coated surface of your air fryer basket to chip off. I put a bit of avocado oil in a small bowl and brush it on with a silicone brush, though actually with the fries I never use any oil as they are coated already. Just a tip gleaned from lots of people who had this problem!
Nonaerosol sprays may be okay.
