Why my keto trail mix is the best

Arman Liew

When my partner and I were strictly following a keto diet, this low-carb trail mix was our savior on more than one occasion.

When developing this recipe, it was important to me to make it “fun” (like any good trail mix… there’s always duds in them), so, besides nuts and seeds, I added some keto-friendly treats to make it that much more special.

Even though neither of us follow this diet anymore, this trail mix has been a staple because it’s so satisfying! Here are some extra reasons to try my recipe:

  • Way cheaper than store-bought. Nowadays, a few brands offer keto-friendly trail mix, but it’s usually twice as expensive as regular trail mix. Ever since I stopped buying store-bought snacks, my wallet has thanked me!
  • Ready in minutes. Just combine everything and give it a good shake. That’s all there is to it.
  • Naturally gluten-free. There are zero gluten-derived ingredients, and if you use dairy-free chocolate chips, it’s totally vegan, too!
  • Easy to customize. I give you a base recipe with my personal favorite trail mix combinations, but you can easily customize it with whatever nuts and mix-ins you have on hand.

Key Ingredients

The full printable list is in the recipe card below.

  • Keto chocolate chips. I used a mixture of sugar-free chocolate chips, sugar free white chocolate chips, and milk chocolate chips. Many grocery stores now stock this, too. If I haven’t made my own, I do like using Lily’s or Little Zebra.
  • Candied nuts. I like the flavor and texture of candied nuts mixed with regular salted nuts. For this recipe, I used my homemade keto candied pecans and tweaked my candied almonds and candied cashews to be low carb (swapped the sugar for allulose).
  • Toasted nuts. I prefer to use harder-to-find nuts like Brazil nuts or macadamia nuts, but you can use any low-carb nuts you like. Some of my favorites are peanuts, walnuts, pistachios, and hazelnuts.

How to make keto trail mix

Step 1- Combine. Combine all the ingredients in a large bowl and stir until fully incorporated.

Step 2- Store. Pour into individual baggies or jars and seal to avoid added moisture.

Ways to use low-carb trail mix

Aside from snacking, there are endless uses for this low-carb trail mix recipe. For a more nutritious topping, I like to add it on top of keto acai bowls, keto oatmeal, keto yogurt, or even keto ice cream.

Recipe tips and variations

  • Avoid raw nuts. I’ve found that too many raw nuts can cause an upset stomach, so unless you’re toasting them at home, I’d stick to buying pre-toasted nuts.
  • Make a nut-free trail mix. Swap the nuts for pepitas and sunflower seeds.
  • Make it salty and sweet. This is predominantly a sweet trail mix, but if you’d like a more salty-sweet version, add keto cheese chips or parmesan crisps, or use salted nuts.
  • Add more mix-ins. Like unsweetened coconut flakes, dried unsweetened blueberries, or unsweetened cranberries. Avoid high-carb dried fruits like raisins or figs. I sometimes add keto granola, too.

How to store leftovers

To store: Leftover trail mix should be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 months.

To freeze: You can freeze the trail mix in a ziplock bag for up to 6 months. Let it thaw overnight before enjoying.

  1. Haha you kill me with all of your mean girl references and yes, I have been personally victimized by trail mix lol. My mom used to give me little boxes of trail mix for lunch as a kid and I would just eat the chocolate chips and then throw out the rest. Amen to this trail which contains all the good stuff and no fillers!!!

  2. Haha I literally eat trail mix the exact same way. All the good stuff goes first, then the poor peanuts and raisins are just left to sit in the bag until I forget all about it. I love the idea of trail mix that only has the good stuf!

    1. I just had the best idea……Blend the raisins, peanuts and cocoa together and make larabars 😀 Hidden goodness 😀

  3. Hahaha…I totally agree! Trail mix is such a mixed bag (no pun intended). I try to be fair and just grab handfuls and then deal with what I get. That way the last handful still might have some good stuff in it. But my sister-in-law totally goes diving and pulls out the best pieces and then leaves the rest on the counter. Needless to say, I’m not impressed. I think I called her the Christmas Grinch one year for that move. Anyways, love the idea of making it yourself instead! I need to do this ASAP…but call me weird as I actually like the peanuts. Mmmm…salt + chocolate. 🙂

  4. Oh it’s just so easy to buy trail mix but I completely agree, there is never a kind that has ALL the ingredients I like. And I haven’t tried any of those chocolate chips, thanks for linking them bc I’ll need to try them in a few recipes.
