Why I love this recipe

Arman Liew

Confession: I developed my keto bread recipe specifically to make avocado toast in the mornings. Back when I followed a keto diet, there were very few keto breads on the market. The few that were did not taste good and were similar to cardboard (sorry).

These days, I’ve had readers telling me of a new brand they’ve found and enjoy, which means my keto avocado toast is being made on repeat.

My recipe doesn’t involve anything too special- toast your bread and add a seasoned avocado spread on top. My top tip is not to omit the lemon juice- it adds acidity, which prevents the avocado from turning brown!

Key Ingredients

The base is any toasted low carb bread of choice (I love my keto bread). You then mash an overripe avocado, adding salt and pepper for flavor, a squeeze of lemon juice to prevent browning, and if you like heat, a sprinkle of red pepper flakes

How to make keto avocado toast

  1. Make the avocado spread. In a small bowl, add the ripe avocado and mash with a fork until mostly smooth. Add the lemon juice and spices and mix to combine.
  2. Assemble. Toast the bread, then spread the mashed avocado mixture between the slices.

Arman’s recipe tips

  • Use other types of keto breads. I like the classic look of sandwich bread, but I’ve enjoyed when made with keto naan bread, keto flatbread, or even keto biscuits
  • Save time and use pre-made guacamole instead. Just make sure there are no hidden sugars.
  • Toast the bread in a pan. If I have the time, I prefer toasting bread in a pan over medium heat with a little melted butter. It gives the bread a crispier texture and keeps the edges from burning.

Serving ideas!

Think of avocado toast as a blank canvas and serve it with anything you want! Here are some ideas:

  • Served with proteins like a fried over easy egg, air fryer bacon, or smoked salmon.
  • Topped with tomato slices and fresh herbs, like fresh basil or cilantro.
  • Sprinkled with feta cheese or goat cheese and bagel seasoning.
  • Topped with pickled red onions, sprouts, arugula, and sea salt.
  • Add a drizzle of olive oil and balsamic vinegar.
